Ok, this rant was inspired by Briga_ but I completely agree. You know when your harmlessly scrolling through fanfiction, trying to find something, and you come across a random book. 'Aha!' You exclaim (although you probably wouldn't exclaim coz it's usually the middle of the night. Just saying.) 'I shall read this!' (Yeah I'm gonna stop with the formal language) so you start reading, expecting some kind of amazing story. After this you usually emerge disgusted and angry with the fandom, so here are a couple of things that could have possibly angered you-
1- When Harry is extremely well off and has everything he ever wanted, as well as being talented at every frigging subject and just generally being perfect. GET IT RIGHT PEOPLE!!! (Whoops I should keep my voice down. That was rude...) anyway, obviously Harry is not going to be amazing and flawless, because no one is! Obviously he is not going to own a Niffler, have a Pheonix and Griffin as pets, be the holder of a Gringotts vault filled with millions of galleons, have three different animagus forms, be a metamorphagus and become talented at anything he tried whatsoever, even if he has only practised or experienced it once. Harry is a wizard. Not a superhuman. The point of the first book, basically, is that Harry has been treated like scum and hasn't been able to do anything he wanted for years, then is suddenly whisked off to a world where he is revered. He isn't a billionaire. He isn't a master sorcerer. He's a kid who happens to have magical powers.
2-When the wizarding world is exactly like the muggle world. This just irritates me so much!!! I have read fanfictions where they would use iPods at Hogwarts. I mean, hasn't anyone read Hogwarts, a History?! (Hahaha...😔) And there are fanfictions where female characters are constantly called sluts and whores, are obsessed with makeup and revealing clothing, and where male characters are sleazy, have dirty minds and are just players. Okay, firstly, STEREOTYPES MUCH!!! And secondly, most of these fanfictions are based around Harry's school years, but is anyone really like that at that point? No!!! This is where I enjoy the way characters are portrayed in the movies.
They are not obsessed with how they look. Sure, for the Yule Ball they would dress up, and I'm sure they care about looking presentable, but no female characters are sluts. And no male characters are players. I read one fanfiction which especially annoyed me, where Fred was dating this girl, and he was all sweet, but then he cheats, (typical nonsense! I mean Fred cheating? Get a grip) and then blah blah blah he wants her back, but she isn't ready to trust him, and then there's all this stuff about how they meet and he begs to have her back, but she says only if he manages to last a month without dating anyone. If he lasted that long then she'd know that he was truly loyal. The next bit literally went like this; She left and Fred was considering her offer. -Fred: 'A month without dating anyone! She's crazy! I'm a teenage boy, I do have needs! But I really like her, so I'll try.' I'm not joking. That is not Fred. Some people need to gain a little perspective when writing their fanfiction.
3-Ok, the last one sort of merged into this one, but stereotypes, and overused story lines. Almost every Fred or George fanfiction has the previous storyline, and neither Fred or George are that...ugh! There are countless fanfictions with George being the sweet, simple twin, and Fred being the dirty minded, suggestive twin. First of all, NO!!!! Fred and George are equally mischievous and George is definitely not simple. These fanfictions always have the main girl dating one twin, and the other twin secretly crushing on her. They also usually have someone who cheated, or thought to be cheating, and then a whole lot of anger and jealousy. It gets on my nerves.
4-Again, back to number 2, when Hogwarts is a place where they have wild parties in the grounds and stuff like rape happens in the castle. To all the people who have done this, STOP RIGHT NOW AND READ EVERY BOOK AND WATCH EVERY MOVIE MORE THAN THREE TIMES OVER BEFORE COMING BACK TO YOUR STORY!!!!!!
