I crouched down, listening for any sounds. Glancing around I took in the sparse woods, searching for animal carcasses or obviously zombies. Not seeing anything I relaxed, my shoulders rolling downwards. I sighed, flicking a piece of dirt of my grimy skin.
My dirty ponytail brushed against my back. I glanced warily around, catching sight of my fellow survivors. Matt was taking his turn sleeping, chest rising evenly. His hair had grown out a bit. His muscled arms were crossed at his side, grasping his knife. I debated taking it from him so he didn't hurt himself... But I figured there were more dangerous things. Owen sat beside him. His knuckles were white, as he clutched the bag with our ammo. His wide eyes stared into the darkness. He had been unusually quiet since his mother had disappeared.
Anthony sighed next to him, flexing his arms and tracing spirals into the dry dirt. His eyebrows were drew together, contemplating, thinking.
Kyle sat next to Anthony, watching him draw. They were cousins. We were all 14 except Kyle was 15. His blue eyes were almost closed.
I guess I liked being the only girl a little bit, the guys protected me. I liked to think I didn't need protection but i couldn't deny I was scared. But I wish there was a girl. The boys had gotten quite used to my chattering about hot boys, periods, and my craving for gourmet food. I guess I'm kind of a pain.
I didnt remember falling asleep but two hands shook me awake. It was still dark and I laid, confused. What was going on. I fought to stand up. But two hands pushed me down.
"Matt what the f-?" I was cut off as two hands clamped down on my mouth. I resisted biting him and fought for breath under his sweaty palms.
"Shh" he said under his breath. "Someone's over there. We're packing up. Get your weapon."
I strained to nod and shoved his arm off my mouth, grabbing my knife and tucking it in my belt loop.
The boys nodded and we set forward, mud muffling our footfalls. A small fire burned in the distance and we walked behind trees until we reached it. No one was there and all supplies had disappeared except for a small round of ammo. I stuffed it in my pocket.
"Great way to attract zombies" Kyle scoffed, stomping the fire out. We started back, me trudging behind, sleep still masking my senses. Suddenly hands clamped around me, throwing me to the ground. I reached instinctively to my knife but the person pinned my hand to the ground with their knee.
I fought for air. Owen ran over, whisper shouting to the others. They sprinted towards me, still far away. The person leaned close, "I'll take my ammunition before I kill you for zombie bait." this person was a girl.
I gasped, straining against this girl. She jabbed her finger into my pressure point. "If you scream I will kill you slowly. Shut up and give me the ammo" she threatened. I spit in her face.
"It'd be nice if I gave you the ammo." I hissed "But my hands are pinned to the ground."
My eyes adjusted as she pulled out her knife.
Realization made my gut drop. I stared into her blue eyes. "Melissa!"
