After finally having eaten desert, June is ready to go home before any more embarrassing stories are told.
"Bye. Thanks for a nice dinner, mom." June says and waves and quickly stands from her chair.
"Will you stay if I promise not to tell any embarrassing stories, darling?" Elaine asks with a knowing smile playing on her lips.
"Yes mom. But that's a promise you can't keep because telling embarrassing stories about me is your specialty." June laughs softly and Elaine nods with eyes that are sparkling with laughter.
"Maybe the kids should leave." Sandra says amused. "It's much easier to talk about them when they aren't here."
"Ha ha, mom." Matt laughs dryly. "I never said I wanted to leave, you know. It's only June who wants to leave.""That's because I haven't told the story about that time when you wanted to be Barbie when you grew up." Sandra laughs heartily and Matt's face pales a bit.
"Noooo, mom!" He says and grabs Junes hand hastily. "We are definitely leaving. Sorry I didn't agree to it right away, baby."
"But I wanna hear that story." June pouts and bashes her eyelashes at Matt who rolls his eyes. "I promise I'll tell it to you once we're married."
June gasps in mock surprise. "I heard that, babe. Now you're never getting rid of me purely becaue I want YOU to tell me that story."
They all laugh and Matt leans it to whisper in June's ear "That I can work with, baby."
"Well, we should leave so you guys can have some parents' time." June says sweetly and give all four parents a hug before she and Matt head home.
Back at June's apartment, Matt throws himself onto the bed. "That was..." He struggles to find the right words but settle on "Something else."
She laughs happily and agrees with him. "I wouldn't have expected it any other way."
"I have to remember that if I ever make you upset then I'll have to get you an entire peach glazed cheesecake." He chuckles.
She laughs softly. "We're gonna be just fine as long as you remember this. If a peach glazed cheesecake can't fix it, then you've really messed up."
The next few days before Matt and his parents leave for San Francisco passes by in a blur for June. They visit a lot of beautiful places and eat at a lot of different restaurants. Even a few that June hasn't eaten at before.
"I'm sorry you have to go, babe. I don't want you to. This has been great." June mutters against Matt's shoulder.
"Me too, baby. I'll be back as soon as possible. I know it's gonna be a while until you can have some time off at your job." He murmurs with his chin softly nestled on top of her head.
"We'll talk to you as soon as we land sweetie." Sandra says and gently pulls June's away from Matt to hug her.
June takes a deep breath to stop the tears in her eyes from overflowing and nods before she unwillingly leaves Sandra's warm embrace to quickly give Andrew a hug before it's time for them to check in.
An hour and a half later June is sitting alone on her couch. Her parents have just left because she wasn't feeling up to being social any longer. She promised her mom she'd call if she needed them.
In a desperate attempt to preoccupy herself until Matt call, she grabs a bunch of cleaning supplies and starts to clean all the keyholes in the apartment and then she moves on to doing a load of laundry. Then she's saved by the phone. Sandra's calling her.
"Hiiiii." She almost yells into the phone. "Did you guys arrive just fine?"
Sandra chuckles warmly and says "Hi sweetie. We did. Matt and Andrew are picking up the suitcases. I just wanted to talk to you alone for a little while. I tried to while we were visiting but it never really seemed like the right time."
"What's up?" June asks nervously.
"Oh, don't worry sweetheart." Sandra reassures her." I really just wanted to tell you thank you for making my son this happy. I haven't seen him like this in a very long time. I actually don't think I have ever seen him THIS happy. You've made my biggest dream come true."
June's so touched by Sandra's kind words that she struggles to make words come out of her mouth. "You're welcome." She croaks and takes a deep breath before shakingly adding "He makes me very happy too. I had actually given up on love entirely when I met him because I kept meeting all these weird men who hurt me a lot emotionally."
"I'm sorry sweetheart. I'm so glad you two found each other." Sandra says and shortly after she adds "Here comes your man. I'm sure he'll scold me for talking to you before him."
June laughs until she hears Matt voice "Hi baby. Miss me yet?"June sighs. "I always miss you when we're not together."
He chuckles happily. "Right back at you babe. I have to go again actually. I promised to be the designated driver from here."
"I love you. Talk to you later." June mutters sadly.
"I love you more." Matt says before hanging up.
