In the year 4029 parts of planet earth have become too polluted to live in. Humans chose instead to live underground instead, using underground rivers as a resource. However, on the surface of the earth, animals have evolved and adapted to the poisonous environment. New species were formed and previous predators became easy prey. Producers such as trees and other plants became makers of carbon dioxide and absorbed precious oxygen.
Underground, there is only one entry to the human world. There is no other way in. Humankind has not changed. They have developed an oxygenated gas mask which implants a tiny sapling into a chamber of the mask, then taking carbon dioxide from the wearer of the mask to the plant and then taking oxygen produced by the plant back to the wearer.
Humankind has no idea what has befallen the surface of earth. Many brave adventurers have gone up but never returned. The few that did went mad, insane. They claimed to have seen monsters, giant killers. No one believed them. No one went up to the surface, either.
Professor Buckingham Glurton chose to dedicate his life to the surface of the earth and had a theory that if someone were to build a controlled wormhole generator then they would be able to go up to the earth’s surface and return straight back when endangered. He chose to be such a person, to create such a machine. And after years and years of failures and jeers from others, he finally succeeded.
But some people discovered Glurton’s machine and decided that there was money to come out of this. They tried to negotiate with him but Glurton refused to sell it. The people killed Glurton. Henry Moss Glurton, the Professor’s 12 year old son witnessed the whole event. He was afraid that the people would come for him as well, as they had seen that he knew they were the killers. He quickly packed a bag full of the things he thought he would need, including a gas mask and some food. While he was about to set off for refuge at a friend’s house, the people came. He ran to his father’s laboratory and unknowingly accidentally activated the wormhole generator controller to the surface of the earth.
The people came to the laboratory. They found nothing but exploded broken circuits. The wormhole controller and generator was nothing but a mere prototype. It had exploded soon after Henry had gone through to the surface.
Henry woke up with a start. ‘Where am I?’ he wondered aloud. Then he realised that he couldn’t breathe. He snapped his gas mask on and activated it. Suddenly, he realised that he must have gone through the wormhole. He was in a forest. No. There were not any trees. You could not call them trees. They were oddly shaped, black and covered with a layer thick black dust. Henry realised with horror that they were moving. Slowly, of course, but moving all the same. Suddenly, something burst through the vegetation. A huge cat had sprung forward. But it wasn’t a cat. It was massive, with giant muscles and sharp teeth. Henry did the sensible thing. He ran. The predator chased after him. Henry realised that to the creature, he was prey. He was food. On and on he ran. The creature chased after him. Soon, it would catch up.
Just when there seemed to be no hope, he saw a sort of nest on one of the strange black trees. A hand reached out and grabbed him-lifted him straight out of the creature’s reach. Henry slumped to the floor of the nest, absolutely exhausted. “You’ll have to do better than that if you want to survive.” A female voice said dryly. Henry stared. A girl, no older than him was there. He had thought that he was the only human to be here. “Wondering why I’m here?” she asked. Henry nodded. The girl explained that her parents were explorers. They had ventured up to the earth’s surface and had given birth to her. They were intrigued but devastated about the adaptions the earth had taken because of pollution. Now there were creatures and plants that were eager for blood. Since water was now in rare supply, they lapped up blood of other organisms to survive. There was no set specific food webs here. It was literally kill and survive or be killed and die. There were no producers of oxygen here. The girl had only survived using her parent’s gas mask, whose plant had nearly died because of the lack of water.

Random Story I wrote for Biology Homework in Year 7
Science FictionOkay, to everyone who will somehow stumble across this. This is an extremely INCOMPLETE story which I wrote in year 7, for biology homework. In other words, it sucks. I myself read it again and tried not to laugh, it didn't make sense in SO many are...
