IN THE YEAR 1994, THREE VERY SIGNIFICANT THINGS HAPPENED in Michelle Sullivan's tragically mundane life.
Firstly, her mother's alcoholism got so bad that after years of putting up with it, her father finally snapped and disappeared. Well, to say it was just the alcoholism was an understatement-it was the cheating too, that made him up and leave his entire family and disappear to God knows where. They never knew where he'd gone-for nearly a year it had been radio silence, but Michelle was positive it had to be better than Shittyside. And even if she resented him for leaving them all-with her nonetheless-she still envied him for getting to do what she'd only dreamed about for years.
With the only source of income leaving (not that they had a lot in the first place), the Sullivan's were much worse off than before, and most of the family's responsibility fell on Michelle's shoulders. Her mother, with nowhere else to turn for cash, returned to her job as-the way her mother put it-an exotic dancer, except she rarely even returned home after her shifts to take care of her four kids. Instead of parenting like a good mother, Pamela Sullivan did everything she could to block out her depression, which often ended up being alcohol, drugs or meaningless sex with the guys who came into the club. So then, it was up to Michelle to make sure her troublesome litte brothers got to school on time and ate three meals a day.
Second, another horrible massacre happened in Shadyside-not that anyone cared or took the time to do anything about it. They never did. No one cared what happened in Shadyside except the poor suckers who had to live there and unfortunately for Michelle, she was one of those poor suckers. But the mall massacre itself was only the beginning of the horror story starring Michelle and her best friends when they accidentally upset the grave of local horror legend, Sarah Fier, the supposed witch from 1666 who was hung for her crimes and threatened to curse the town of Shadyside to seek her revenge. But there was something about the story that just didn't seem right and the Shadyside teens are determined to figure out the truth about the two towns.
And the third thing? Despite all the horrific, gory things she experienced in those few fateful days, the third had to be the worst of them all.
She fell for her best friend.
