"Shoto?"

Shoto shook himself awake from where he was already dozing off in his mother's lap and her warmth. He looked up, and saw the comforting look and smile his mother gave him. Shoto smiled back. "Sweetie, I haven't even told the story yet." Rei said with a soft chuckle. "Oh, I'm sorry." Shoto apologizes, a pout on his lips. "It's alright dear." Rei rocks the both of them on her wooden rocking chair, humming a sweet tune. "How about I tell you how me and your father met." Shoto perks up at that, and nods.

"Enji was a very kind man... He would open doors for young ladies, help elders cross the street."-Rei laughs, then smiles lovingly-"He'd even help kittens that were stuck in trees. I fell for that kind and handsome man..." Shoto leans into his mother's embrace with a small smile. "When we first met, I was rushing to get to my college classes. I had been studying all night for my exams, so I barely got any sleep. We ran into each other on the sidewalk. Enji picked up my books and papers, and helped me up. I had felt like I owed him for helping me, so I invited him for coffee when I finished my exams. We got to know each other, and soon I had developed a small crush. It was childish, I know, but I loved him. When he told me what he was.. I accepted it." Rei's smile went away, and she closed her eyes. "That- was my first mistake."

Shoto turned his head around to face her. He stared in confusion at her. "Enji soon told me that our meeting wasn't a coincidence. That he sought me out by my scent. He told my blood smells better than any other human he's seen. He-he told me that the first time he tasted my blood, he felt a surge of power... Enji started craving it. He asked, and asked, and asked. I accepted, and accepted, and accepted, too afraid to say no, because I thought he wouldn't love me if I did. We got married, and had three children. Color me shocked when Toya told me that two of his teeth were very pointy. This made Enji worse though.. He neglected Fuyumi and Natsuo because they weren't vampires. Then he started to push Toya to get stronger, to adapt to drinking human blood. He soon got sick. Of course, he got better but Toya was never the same. So, Enji gave up on him and convinced me to have another child with him."

Rei started to play with Shoto's mismatched hair, massaging his scalp with her soft fingers. "I soon gave birth to you, Shoto. Your father is anticipating the day that we see whether you will be a vampire or not. But, I am worried about something." Shoto looked up at his mother. "What is it?" He asked, very curious about what Rei is worried about. "If, and this is a big if, you do become a vampire.. And what happened with Enji and me happens with you too, promise me you won't become the same person he has." She says, eyes completely serious. Shoto nodded his head and said, "I promise."

Shoto stood in front of the bathroom mirror, clutching the sink in agony. He stares at his reflection and watches as his eyes glow a light blue and a gray. His pupils dilate, his mouth hurts, and he has a splitting headache. Shoto snarls at his reflection. He groans and watches as his canines sharpen. He grips the sink even harder, breaking it in half. His sister must've heard the commotion, because she barges into the bathroom and jogs to his side. Fuyumi holds onto Shoto's arm to keep him upright. "Are you alright?!" She asked worriedly, frantic eyes scanning his face. When the pain had subsided, Shoto nodded his head.

"Open your mouth." Fuyumi demands. He opens his mouth, and his sister gasps when she sees his canines. Tears pricked her gray eyes, and she held him tightly. "I'm so, so, so sorry!" Fuyumi said over and over again. Shoto shut his eyes and hugged her back.

Shoto's father's large hands held the shoulders of a girl about his age. Her eyes were unfocused, and her movements were sloppy, but she wasn't drunk or on drugs. Something called, compulsion?, that makes anyone follow your command. Enji's hand trailed up from her shoulder, to her chin, and tilted her head up. Shoto could feel his canines begin to sharpen at the sight of her neck. The thump thump of her heart piercing his ears. "Don't be scared, Shoto. Take a bite. She is your type, isn't she?" His father tells him, twirling a few strand of the girl's blonde hair between his fingers.

The temptation was too much for Shoto. He quickly walked to the girl, and placed his hands on her slim waist. He carefully sunk into the smooth skin of her neck, drinking the sweet blood from her body. A small noise came from the girl, but other than that, she didn't react. Shoto kept drinking, and drinking, and drinking. He opened his eyes and looked up at his father's triumphant smirk. Than, the story his mother had told him came into his mind.

"If, and this is a big if, you do become a vampire.. And what happened with Enji and me happens with you too, promise me you won't become the same person he has."

Shoto's eyes widened when he realized what her was doing. He quickly let go of the girl. "What are you doing Shoto? Keep drinking!" Enji snapped, pushing the blonde girl into his arms. "No!" Shoto looked into the girls lilac eyes. "Leave, and forget this ever happened." Once Shoto was finished with compelling her, she had gasped and hastily ran away.

As he watched her run, he felt a wave of guilt crash into him.

He didn't want it to be real.

Shoto didn't want to believe what his mother said. He COULDN'T. Because if he did, he could end up like his father, and he didn't want that to happen.

He's already hurt enough people as it is..
