Tanjiro would carefully observe his father's breathing during his dancing. He also remembered the time his father had slain the bear to show him the spirit world. One day, he decided to practice. He learned how to do it and smiled. He started helping his father and the family never lived close to poverty, at least until his father died. He swore to never use the Hinokami Kagura, the dance of the fire god unless he absolutely had to, as it painfully reminded him of the time he spent with his father. He still practiced, of course. But one day, after returning from a trip to the village, his life changed forever.
Above is the description. Reading it is suggested but it's not really relevant to the story, but more of a summary to the prologue... granted anime and manga fans should know where this goes. The story starts below.
Tanjiro sat on the porch of his house as he watched his father do the dance of the fire god or the Hinokami Kagura. He noticed the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest and the way he moved his feet and the way the wooden blade he used moved through the air and how some fire came out of his mouth through the full-face blindfold. He watched carefully and studied the movements.
Time Skip Twenty-four hours
Tanjiro stepped outside and started trying the Hinokami Kagura. Little did he know, his father was watching. Tanjiro started practicing and by the fifth hour, he was able to get the steps down. He then picked up a stick and started using the steps and the arm movements. By the seventh hour, he'd completed a quarter of the movements. He took a gasp for air and realized that he'd been out all night. He nearly fell over from the sudden shock to his body and was about to hit the snow when his father caught him. They both saw a bright gleam on the horizon and noticed it was the sun. Tanjiro's eyes widened in surprise. He'd been outside for seven hours. He smiled as he fainted.
Tanjuro, Tanjiro's father, came upstairs to check on him. He saw Tanjiro start to stir. "Tanjiro, I want you to try and use this," Tanjuro's voice spoke. He gave Tanjiro the special stick that was used for the Hinokami Kagura, the six-bladed stick.
Time Skip Three Months
"Tanjiro. I want to show you something," Tanjuro whispered to his son, wood-chopping ax in hand. Tanjiro slowly woke up and got dressed before following his father outside. Out there, they saw a bear that towered over them with a height of at least eight feet tall. It let out a loud growl and started thrashing around, causing the bells on the wires it was stuck to start chiming. Tanjiro watched as his father focussed and closed his eyes. Suddenly, he realized what his dad had done. He couldn't feel the natural presence most people had when they got close to him. His dad then opened his eyes and approached the bear. The bear didn't seem to notice him until he got within its sights, which were limited in the dark. It growled and attacked, but it seemed like his father knew where it was going to strike before it knew. He jumped up with his ax and sliced off the bear's head with two clean slashes. He landed smoothly. "That, Tanjiro, is a special technique I learned. I shall teach you tomorrow. For now, sleep," Tanjuro told him. Tanjiro went to bed and fell asleep.
Time Skip One Year and Three Months Later
Tanjiro was crying as he looked at the burial post of his father. "I swear that unless the day comes, I won't use anything you taught me, father unless it's to harvest wood as you showed me," Tanjiro said to the grave.
Time Skip to When he was Twelve
"Tanjiro! Come here! Your face is pitch-black!" Kie Kamado, Tanjiro's mother, called to him. She wiped his face. "You don't need to go down today, you know," She spoke softly. Tanjiro only smiled. "It's okay! I want us all to have a great feast for tomorrow!" Tanjiro said with a large smile. "Tanjiro! Can I come too?" Hanako asked. Suddenly, Tanjiro got an idea. "I think I have enough energy. I'll take Takeo with me. Sorry Hanako, but I need to show Takeo in case I pass away like our dad did," Tanjiro said sadly. Takeo nodded. "Next time, I'll take you guys with me," Tanjiro said as he walked down, Takeo in tow.
Time Skip To Night
Tanjiro introduced Takeo to the villagers and showed him what to do if people needed stuff and how he could sell if someone didn't want it. The two were talking as dusk fell and started heading up the mountain when they heard someone call them. "Boys! Don't go out at night! There could be demons!" The man called. "Don't worry about us, old man Saburo! We'll be fine!" Tanjiro called. Saburo started being insistent and the two siblings finally relented and decided to sleep with the old man. "But old man, can't the demons come into our houses?" Takeo asked. The old man nodded. "But there are demon slayers for a reason," He said. Saburo turned off the lights and Tanjiro fell asleep, remembering his grandmother said the same thing before she passed away.
Tanjiro and Takeo bid their farewells to the old man. The thirteen and nine-year-olds both were walking home when Takeo noticed Tanjiro stop. "The smell of blood," Tanjiro muttered. Takeo heard him and the two immediately rushed to their house. Takeo turned around and puked. Tanjiro's eyes widened. "No no no no no! Not them too!" He yelled. He started feeling them and noticed that Nezuko was still slightly warm. "Takeo! Help me out! Nezuko is still alive! Let's take her to see a doctor!" Tanjiro yelled. The two both picked up Nezuko and started carrying her.
Time Skip Ten Minutes
Tanjiro and Takeo were walking carefully when both of them slipped. They both felt dazed but came too. They both saw Nezuko standing. "Big Sister! Are you okay?" Takeo yelled. Nezuko let out a feral growl and jumped on Tanjiro. His eyes widened. "She's a demon now!" He yelled.
