I looked down at my waist as I sipped a rum drink straight from its source. I was finally shaking off the pallor of the city I'd inhabited. It was so hard to get that Southern glow back, but five days in the sun seemed to have me nearly restored to my bronzed glory.  Ever the fitness enthusiast, I'd been exploring the island each morning at dawn, but I'd returned just in time for brunch. We we reclined in our beach chairs, coconut rum drinks in hand, I heard a text alert on my phone. Lin.

"Hey hey! Hope I'm not bothering you at work!"

I snapped a picture of my toes in the sand and the island sprawled out before me.

"Nevis???"

"Seemed like a nice place to escape the drudgery of the city. Needed to work on my tan. I'll be a new man when I get back to New York. lolol"

Why did I say that?!

"Right! So, I wanted to send you a copy of the prints from the Vogue shoot," it read. "I made sure to give my hairstylist credit. Remember me when you're famous, kid."

"Dude. You  didn't have to do that! You're so kind. My first major gig, how bout that, huh?" I waited a beat before asking him about Sebastian.
"Still completely infatuated with you. He keeps asking to go to the clinic again but I keep having to explaining to him that he's not injured anymore."
"Aww bébé! He's always welcome to come visit me," I said, thinking about how much I missed the spunky little guy.
"Well, actually, I was thinking maybe we could come to one of your theater classes at the center? I would love to hang out with the kids again and I know Seb would love to see you. Would that be ok?"

"I think the kids would be overjoyed to see you again. We are having a Latin dance teacher come in for a class next Thursday-maybe you could join us?"

"Now you're speaking my language!"

"hasta el jueves!"

"Jajaja! I see what you did there. Bravo!"

I locked my phone and laid it on the armrest of my beach chair. I took a long, slow sip of my drink until the sound of my straw slurping at the last few drops of beverage broke the silence. Schylar was staring a hole through me, arms akimbo.

"Is there an elephant in the room we need to discuss?" she asked.

"I was hoping to just keep ignoring it until it found another room to hang out in."

"So there's seriously nothing going on?"

"With me and Lin? Don't be foolish."

"You don't be foolish, child."

I turned my head fully towards her and lowered my sunglasses.

"I got this. I can be friends with a dude. I just made a. lasting impression on his young 'un. He's just a cool guy. We're friends. Nothing more. I wish you'd stop implying otherwise."

"Well, prove me wrong or prove me right."

"Fine then! I'll prove you wrong. Now drink your free fruity beverage and hush."

But still....just look at those eyes....

just look at those eyes
