Her dark hair snagged on an out reached branch as she darted through the ancient woods. Her breath coming out in short gasps as she fought the sharp pang in her side. She could hear the beast crashing through the underbrush behind her. She tried to run faster as fear clinched her heart and made her blood run cold. She stumbled on an up-reaching tree root and fell to her hands and knees. She scrambled to her feet ignoring her bruised knees and scraped palms. A sharp screech pierced the night as the beast gained on her, she almost caught a whiff of its foul, acrid breath.

She leapt over the edge and dove into the darkness of the cold clear water as the beast let out an angry, frustrated screech.
Her body slammed into the icy water and the darkness engulfed her.
