Staring blankly into the deserted hallways, the walls seemed to close in like an unwelcoming embrace. Heat evaporated from his body, creating a dim glow around him. With sweaty palms, he stomped noisily down the hallway and switched off the lights with a low grunt. His heart rate raced as if he had completed a marathon. In the darkness, his hands felt for the cold, metallic feel of the door knob with urgency. Fumbling with his keys, he let out a sigh of relief as the cold breeze filled his nostrils in a welcoming manner. Passing by the lifeless streets, he quickened his pace. With his heart in his throat, someone called out,

"Hey, you!"

Without glancing back, adrenaline pumped through his veins. Breaking into a sprint, he tried catching his breath as rushing footsteps emerged. Sweat trickled down his brow as the tall figure emerged him.

"What's wrong?" the man asked him.

"Nothing!" he yelled back with frustration, "What do you want from me?!"

"I think you mistook my question mate. I meant to ask you, why are you up this late?" the man answered with a furrowed brow.

"Why is it these days people stick their noses into other people's businesses?"

Without another glance, he stalked off without a word. Calling out from the distance, the man yelled,

"Wait! What do you mean? I was just asking if you were okay. Is that a crime?"

Flashbacks of the scene replayed before his eyes. Sticky and warm filth covered his shaking hands. Pure hot anger ripped him apart. Growling into the night, he raised his arm into the wake of night and sent it down on top of a tear streaked face. Hunger for something else reared him to get a hold onto something cold and metallic. Smearing his fingers into the limp figure's wounded side, he pulled at her hair as if she was a rag doll, until she cried out in fear and agony. Pinpricks of pain pulsed through her head like waves crashing against the shore. The sharp end of his smiling friend bit into her skin. Her lungs were screaming. Her body was frozen with fear. Her eyes were searching for another place. Another chance. Another escape.
