the wolven race was born into a hierarchy that has been upheld since the dawn of their species. it's been engrained in their biology as natural as the air in their lungs, but like any other creature struggling against the test of time, their odds begin to slip ...
customs die and prayers are forgotten. the gods weaken in the hearts of wolf-kind. whether this hierarchy was for the better or the worse, it would eventually depend on the ideals of each clan. at a time where an overwhelming eighty-three percent of the wolf population consisted only of alphas and betas, omegas became a highly-coveted sexual luxury or ruthlessly persecuted outcasts.
in the most conservative packs, the belief was attributed to the wish of the forgotten gods urging them to cull the weak and return them to their former glory. others believed it to be a bad omen - a sign that something had gone terribly wrong and the balance was askew as a consequence.
either way, their sentence had been passed in the form of whittling numbers and the scarce opportunity to reproduce, unless they returned to their roots and worshipped their gods once more. because of this, shrines were erected all across their territories — in time to become proper temples — and the gods were revered again.
unfortunately, their devotion differed greatly between clans and civil conflict could not be avoided. in the most fortunate clans, omegas became fiercely protected due to their rarity. with the threat to run barren constantly looming over their heads, these wolves were treasured like jewels, though not all were treated as such. trafficking rose to the advantage, and many turned into temporary slaves for the right price. omegas became cash cows and symbols of status and - whether they liked it or not - they were flaunted and renowned.
in less tolerant groups, it was quite the opposite. omegas were treated worse than the plague itself. some wolves interpreted the gods' message as a blessing passed only to the strongest amongst them. omegas were thus exiled, hunted, and killed — sparing even a single one was considered sacrilege. for these wolves, cutting down their reproductive limb would be a small price to pay in exchange for the promise of eternal life.
this religious phenomenon would result in a brutal 9-year war.
and chrollo was the seed of a union, war could not spoil.
