The halls of John Adams high were the same as ever. And as the school's best couple, Cory and Topanga stood together in the usual corner, waiting for their third, but necessary, wheel. They were a tricycle.
"Shawn! Finally," said Cory, as soon as the boy walked over. He noticed something that was there yesterday that wasn't there now. "Where's Melanie?"
"Melanie?" Shawn repeated. "Oh, I don't know. We broke up."
"That lasted long," said Cory sarcastically. Shawn was only with Melanie for a day.
"What? Why?" asked Topanga.
"Eh," said Shawn, not looking at the couple. "Wanted something new."
Topanga looked at Cory, unimpressed with his friend. He shrugged.
"Shawn, you really should —" started Topanga, but Shawn was walking away. He had watched a girl at her locker flip her hair.
"If you'll excuse me," said Shawn, walking over to her.
Topanga rolled her eyes, but she and Cory continued to watch from a distance.
"Hi," said Shawn coolly, leaning against the locker next to the girl's.
"Hi..." said the girl, a little confused.
"I'm Shawn Hunter," he smirked.
"I know who you are," said the girl.
"Great," said Shawn with a smile. He got closer, but the girl sidestepped away. "What?" said Shawn. "You like me, don't you?" He knew his way with girls. Most of them.
"No, I don't," said the girl. She didn't face him.
Shawn smiled. "Come on, you like me."
"I definitely don't," said the girl. She turned to her tiny locker mirror to fix her hair, and Shawn looked her in the eyes there.
"You don't even like me a little?"
The girl huffed. "Maybe, like, a microscopic amount," she answered.
"Hey, a michaelscopic amount is good for me." He started to get closer again.
"Micro-scopic," she sounded out, shooing him away. "And would never date you," she finished.
"What?" said Shawn, a little surprised. "Why?"
"Because of your reputation."
"Reputation," repeated Shawn, eyebrows raised.
"You know what I'm talking about," said the girl.
"I know nothing," answered Shawn immediately. "Educate me."
The girl rolled her eyes into her locker, making sure the boy she thought was cute didn't see.
"You'd just make us disappointed," she said. "You can't hold a girl for longer than a day, you'd get bored."
"What?" Shawn exclaimed, crossing his arms. "I would not. Girls are never boring."
"Well..." said Topanga quietly. Shawn turned to her. "You did sort of just say that about Melanie."
"I did not!" said Shawn. "C'mon Cory, back me up here!"
Cory bit the inside of his mouth. "Uhhh... ..."
Shawn huffed. "Thanks, Cory." He turned back to the girl.
"What's your name?"
The girl raised her eyebrows in annoyance. "Cassidy Barlow."
