"Does your Mom know about us?"

Alice's gaze followed the girl that asked. They were alone on the hill. There, she lay on the grass beside her. Curious grey eyes awaited for an answer. Alice thought, that miles away, her mother had just noticed her absence from lunch.

"No." Alice began with a tiny voice "I hadn't told her yet"

The girl abruptly looked up. Alice knew what was going on her mind. How much of a scaredy cat she was for her dishonesty towards her own mother.

She knew that this wasn't what she was sent to the countryside for. The 10 year old heiress playing around with some farm girl. Instead of attending lessons of etiquette as expected, here Alice was basking under the sun. It was then she remembered her appearance. Her once neat blonde hair and crisp day dress now ruined by the wind and soil. Alice laid down alongside her. She closed her eyes and spoke up.

"Harriet,I'm sorry for not being honest with you"

Alice opened her eyes and looked at Harriet. She kept her gaze on the bright blue sky above. Her disheveled golden locks had flower petals in it. She wondered if Harriet knew. Probably did, since she always knew more than Alice. She figured out that that apology wasn't enough.

"I should have told her about this. About you and-"

"If you're scared, you can just tell me" Harriet interjected. She finally looked back,a worried expression on her face. The breeze around them was cool. The sun was shinning, but not too blazing.

Harriet continued," I get scarred too. If Father knew the girl I'm seeing was of status, he would never let me see you again."

Alice was surprised. It turns out she wasn't the only one hiding this friendship. She scooter closer to Harriet. An arm was wrapped around her. It was comforting. The silence spoke what words couldn't. An understanding. A mutual agreement between two young friends spending afternoons together. In their own little world. The birds above them chirped. The sky turned into shades of pink and violet. Another day spent in the company of each other. It was a secret and for the girls,a paradise.

Alice looked over at the petals in Harriet's hair.
"Do you know that there are flowers here?"

This time the answer had not needed an apology.
"Yeah,They're daises from the garden"
"I like them a lot."

And the tree above them swayed to the wind.
