(Lights come up on Sharon, who enters behind Virginia putting away Communion. She looks up at him and smiles but never stops working. Sharon just stands there for a moment.)

SHARON:    Was your whole plan to just act like your little meeting never happened, Virginia?

VIRGINIA:    Never happened? I reckon I need clarification on what you mean—oh are you referring to when the pastor needed your family to step into his office regarding a serious offense committed by your son-

SHARON:    That was alleged—by you.

VIRGINIA:    Yes, very well, and the pastor felt that what I saw merited investigation, so he asked me into his office to provide details on the matter as he spoke with you. Now this does not have to turn into some big jigimajam just because somebody cannot let go of me upholding my Christian duty.

SHARON:    Your Christian duty could get my son kicked out of the only church—probably one of the only places—he has ever called home. This is all he has. This is all this town has.

VIRGINIA:    Maybe he will think about that next time he wants to take from somebody what does not belong to him.

SHARON:    That's what this is all about. You feel like you are owed so much in your ivory tower that you cannot stand the fact that—

VIRGINIA:    This is about nothing but the simple fact that I cannot lie before my pastor in his own house of worship. Your son will land on his feet no matter what happens. And if not, maybe he can con his way there. (Sharon begins to speak up.) And with all due respect—he does not need this, Sister Kettering. I think maybe you need this. I think your reputation is so important to you that you need to be on top in every way. You could never be the minister so you have to be the children's minister. You cannot stand the fact that your son may have stolen from God, so you deny deny deny until the cows come home. Where they've been, I'll never know, but they must be on a long leave of leisure because you just love to deny deny deny. Look you've gotten worked up to alliteration again.

SHARON:    You are a vile woman Virginia.

VIRGINIA:    Yes well that is between me and my Lord.

SHARON:    My son did nothing wrong.

VIRGINIA:     You do not have to be a genius to see what is happening here, but you have to be a fool not to.
