As soon as my father walked in the door, it felt like all the air in the world had been sucked out. Instinctively, I ducked behind the counter impulsively, leaving Luke's down to two, (well one considering Luke was out helping Lorelai with something) and a confused expression on Jess's face. Words were muttered, sentences were exchanged, and somehow I ended up with an envelope with my name on it scrawled in messy cursive.

I couldn't bring the letter home. No way. It would upset Mom too much and stress her out even more, which was per usual, the last thing she needed. I had to read it, and I was anxious to know what, after disappearing for 4 years, my father had to say.

"Can you leave?" I asked Jess, knowing that this probably wouldn't go over well.
"Excuse me?"
"I said can you leave" I repeated.
"Yeah I heard you" Jess said.
I shot him a glance.
"I live here I can't just leave!"
"What the hell is wrong with you today, why do you even care?!" I asked, feeling the frustration boil over. I silently willed myself not to cry in front of him, even though I could very well feel my eyes watering.
"Jesus" He said.
"I'll leave"

I picked up the envelope with shaking hands and studied my name on the front for a good 10 seconds before deciding to open it.

Dear Allie,
If your reading this, I either passed this along to someone to give to you, or I was too scared to talk to you in person. This letter is supposed to be somewhat of an explanation. I'm not going to pretend that at twelve you didn't know why me and your mom were having marriage problems. I was heavily addicted to marijuana and coke, which caused me to be very emotional.. and violent.., towards the both of you. Which I truly to apologize for you, Allie, you have no idea. I'm sober now. Have been, and it will stay this way. Which is why I'm asking, that as your biological father, I'd like to make some sort of arrangement. I want to be able to meet you. See my beautiful girl, all grown up now. Four years later. Set a date time and place, your choosing. I live and hour outside of Hartford.

Love, Dad.
