HAMUNAPTRA
1926║ AHMANET ║
THE SUN ROSE SLOW AND COOL ON THE DESERT THE NEXT MORNING. Beneath ancient ruins and the guardian statues of evil, the Americans and their Egyptian workers were already at work digging into the statue they had found. Somewhere in these halls, Ahament was stalking the mortals, reddened fingertips ready to hasten their destruction.
"Death will come on swift wings to whomsoever opens this chest. "
She heard the curse echo through her mind as it was spoken aloud, and smiled to herself. The yells of terrified workers filled the air too as a strange noise shook the cavern. The noise only made her relax. Her brother was calling from beyond death, angered at those who disturbed him.
Ahmanet. . .
"Brother," she whispered, eyes widening. He had heard her then, sensed her presence. "Imhotep, I am coming for you. I will free you from your tomb." But his voice died away, and Ahmanet was left with nothing but the echoes of her beloved brother. She snarled inhumanly again, clenching her hands into fists.
Her attention was distracted by another who was running from the scene as well. That little strange man in the red fez. She hadn't liked him earlier, and she certainly didn't like him now. He bolted into the room she stood in, and skidded to a stop in the sand.
"Y - you," he stammered. "You're. . ."
"Beni, wasn't it?" She mused, eyes studying him. "Yes, mortal. I am Ahmanet. And you. . . You reek of deceit." She raised her hand, but he quickly spoke in another language, holding up different religious symbols. One stopped her, however, and she raised an eyebrow. "And yet you speak the language of the Hebrews."
"Aye," he whispered. "I -- I can be useful to you. Don't kill me!"
"How would you be useful to me?"
"I can bring information to you. Bring those explorers to you," he rasped. She considered his offer. He was a pesky little human, but he seemed to have a talent for talking his way out of situations. He could prove useful. She had many servants across the world, but having one so close at hand would be nice.
"Very well." She dropped her hand. "As long as you are useful, I'll allow you to keep your life. I and my brother are your sovereigns, as is Princess Anck-su-Namun. Obey them and obey me well, and your rewards will be great."
"Yes, Your Majesty," he gulped. Good.
He knew her status.
