The whole summer Bokuto was looking forward to entering kindergarten. Last year he was in upper preschool and now he was moving a grade up. Upper preschool and kindergarten classes were put into a mixed class. Bokuto enjoyed this because he got to look up to the older kids. This year he would be "the older kids" and boy was he excited.
Last year, his family friend was in kindergarten which meant that they got to be in the same class. If the grades were separated they wouldn't have been able to be together. She was like his mentor. She taught him quite a bit about the alphabet and numbers. In fact, she was probably the smartest kid in their class. Bokuto was extremely proud to be her best friend.
Now, she was going into first grade. The first graders had to go to school for a full day. Bokuto wanted to be in real school like a big kid but that would also mean he wouldn't be able to have his afternoon naps. He savored the afternoon naps, before long he would have to go to school for six hours.
Bokuto threw his comforter off his body when the clock on his side table changed the hour to eight. He was wide awake since seven thirty but he really wanted to get up at eight to stay on schedule. So for a half hour, he lay in bed with a wide smile thinking about what kindergarten would be like.
The boy threw the owl patterned covers haphazardly over the small bed in an attempt to make it look neater. Everything in the room was owl themed. The walls were grey with tree and owl stickers placed to resemble a forest. His alarm clock was a small owl that told the time on its chest. By the foot of the bed was Bokuto's extensive owl plushie collection. His obsession with owls stemmed from his father and mother who were quite the owl enthusiasts themselves. They worked as zoologists at an owl aviary. It was only natural that their son would take after them.
The kindergartener didn't have to go on his tiptoes to reach the light switch anymore. The lights flashed on (overhead lamp disguised as a bird nest) and he quickly ran over to his closet to pick out clothes for the day. Since he was going into kindergarten, yesterday he had a conversation with his mother about how he didn't need her help anymore to dress himself or get ready.
The clothes he picked were going to give him an older look. No more stupid bowtie like his mother wanted. He dressed in a fuzzy green sweater and a white collared shirt with black shorts and long owl socks. Everyone would know he was a kindergartener and they would think he was cool. Perfect.
He brushed his teeth, ten seconds scrubbing on each tooth. He didn't bother to floss, his father didn't restock the owl flossers, no use using regular ones.
When he entered the kitchen his mother was drinking coffee and looking at her iPad. Probably reading the news or playing candy crush, boring.
"Daaaaad, what did you make for breakfast," he hollered from the kitchen table. His mother told him to use his inside voice. Bokuto giggled in defiance.
His father pulled out the chair across from his mother and set down a plate with a pancake. Of course, it was owl shaped.
"Holy guac dad! When did you learn how to make owl pancakes?" Bokuto asked as he hopped into the chair, starting to eat the pancake.
His father took the seat and the head of the table. "Magic Koutarou. Who will drive you to school?"
"Not you dad! Mom should because she knows Kuroo!" Bokuto exclaimed, bits of pancake falling to the table. His father grabbed a napkin and wiped his face. He could have done it himself, honestly.
"Dang buddy, I know Tetsurou too," his father cried. Finally, his mother set down her Ipad to laugh at the scene playing out in front of her face. The apple didn't fall too far from the tree.
