xxx. SAYING THAT SPENCER MARGERY REID is gifted is an understatement. Her mother, Diana Reid, always told her that she knew right away that her daughter would be special, a genius. And despite those around her not believing it due to Diana's schizophrenia diagnosis, that's exactly what her baby girl became, a certifiable genius.
With an IQ of 187, ability to read 20,000 words per minute, and an eidetic memory; the girl was a prime example of a child prodigy. She ended up graduating high school at the mere age of 12 and achieved three Ph.D's and three B.A.s by the age of 22.
Everyone was always intrigued by her genius (if they weren't bullying her for it), often taking advantage of the often oblivious and naive girl. It wasn't until she met Jason Gideon at one of his guest lectures on profiling that she found someone who understood her and was interested in her at least partially beyond just her intellect.
Gideon convinced her to go into the FBI Academy to become a profiler, using his power as being one of the BAU's founders to have her physicals waved (as they both knew she wouldn't have passed them) and the girl became the youngest recruit at the age of 22.
It took her a while to warm up to her coworkers. After having bad experience with people older than her in school, she wasn't quite used to being shown kindness by her peers. She was the closest to Jennifer Jareau, aka JJ, who reminded Spencer of her mother in her caring and almost motherly nature. Even after over a year of working with her coworkers, she was still a bit apprehensive about opening up to them about everything but she was getting closer.
Jason Gideon's six-month departure from the BAU allowed Spencer to get closer to her boss, Aaron Hotchner, who took over that role as a mentor in Gideon's absence (whether he realized it or not).
Gideon's arrival back, following a new agent join the team named Elle Greenway, follows a new path in her career as a profiler and new relationships with her coworkers who eventually become her family.
