I fix my coat as I walk into the old dinner. Sunrise dinner was only 2 blocks from my apartment. It was the sad-looking piece of tin t
he whole block ever laid eyes on, but the breakfast after church on a Sunday could never be beaten. It was a Tuesday morning which meant the Tuna salad sandwich was on the specials menu. As I entered the diner I was greeted by a blonde who looked to be in her late 30's. The smell of wet mop and tuna filled my nose causing me to gag a little. I scanned the dinner. It was a slow day. I noticed Bob who lived on the second floor was there sitting at the bar reading the newspaper. I finally came to view the tall blonde "Hi hun, table for one? or is your date on his way?" I open my eyes in embarrassment " uh no im- im here actually looking for Josh, I have an interview." She looks taken back " You? Interview? Here?" I give her a small smile before nodding. "Hun if I were you I would be looking for a man to take care of me especially with that nice figure you've got going on there." I tilted my head with a smile still on my face, unsure whether to take it as a compliment or an insult. She uses the menu to wave me over to a door that has a sign plastered on the door fading away. " MANAGERS OFFICE" she gives it a quick knock with her knuckle " Josh, A girl out here for ya" A loud squeak came from the other side before the door revealed the man whom I've seen flirting around on Sundays with the older women. Sunrise was run by a big sweaty lump of a man named Josh. Josh was always sweating and greasy and was a terrible conversationalist, making him an overall unpleasant man. Josh came out in a white muscle shirt showing no muscle but belly. He looked me up and down before moving to the side " In here sweetheart." I gripped my purse tighter and nodded walking in with my head down. I look around to what seems like the broom closet. It smelled as if something had died in here. " So what do I call you Sweetheart?" I sit on the chair fairly close to him. " Um, Delayla uh actually just Layla Rogers." He smirks then burps disgustingly. I die on the inside but hide it with a straight face. " And you want a job, Delayla, why?" I gulp before answering " Well we, - I need the money. M-My parents passed away leaving only me and my twin brother." He leans into his chair causing a loud squeak. " Well, Delayla you're with Josh now and Josh is gonna take care of you real nice, but you gotta take care of Josh." I mentally throw up in my mouth who does this guy think he is? " Thank you Josh, you wont regret giving me this opportunity." He just stairs smirking, lightly chuckling to himself " So when do I start?" "Now. Brenda!!" he calls out. A few moments later the same blonde comes in " What will it be, Chief?" " Take Delayla in the back, she'll be joining the Josh team." I get up following Brenda she whispers to me as we are walking towards the back " Now is your only chance to run and I'd take it." I gulp before shaking my head pushing the door open to reveal the stench of the workplace.

"Alright Hun I'll see you tomorrow before sunrise, get a good night's rest because you're going to need it !" Brenda says as she lets me out the front door. As I followed her around like a lost puppy the rest of the day she became easier to like. Who knew she studied to be a nurse but could not pass the final exam and ended up taking care of her nephew Josh. I couldn't believe it but I'm just thankful for the door that God opened up for me and Steve. I walked as quickly as I could home since nightfall was when the loonies would come out. I get into the apartment building passing the landlord "Coming in late Miss.Rodgers?" I reach in too get my keys from my purse "Awake late Mr. Randle?" I responded snappy. He humphs before turning into his apartment slamming the door. I chuckle before getting to my door. I opened it to see my brother sitting across from him. The one and only James Buchanan Barnes. Steve's best friend since forever. His tall deminor towered over me and Steve. Those eyes had a light that never seemed to fade. He is what you would describe as the popular guy who's best friends with the schools most picked on kids. But his laid-back, generous, and loyal personality is what made me fall in love with him. He never looks down on those who aren't as well-off as he is, causing him to just be the whole package, but an off limits one. Total cliche. "Hey Layla, How was job hunting?" Steve says as he places down a card in front of James. I take off my heels leaving them at the door before walking towards the table. I lean down and hug my brother looking at his hand of cards, I place down 3 cards of his "I got the job , Gin!" I exclaim, Steve shoots up sitting straight looking at me and then the cards " What no way!" James looks at the cards in shock "Damn it Layla" He takes a 5 out of his jacket throwing it on the table. Steve grabs it and then pulls me into a hug. " I'm grateful for you, Layla. I'll find a job soon and you won't have to work." James takes the stack of cards and shuffles them " Wow we have a working girl now. Congratulations." He lifts up arm pulling me into a side hug. I feel the burn from where his arms are stinging my body. His cologne fills my lungs causing me to be a tad light headed. I smile shyly at him but avoid those capturing eyes. What a dreamboat. I take a deep breath before Steve clears his throat at us. " So what's new?" James says as I take a seat taking off my coat. " Well Mr. Randle was waiting in the hall for me again." Steve looks at me " Because that's not creepy." James says before passing the cards out evenly." Tomorrow I'll speak to him." I chuckle at my brother " Steve, as much as I appreciate the thought, I wouldn't want to spend the day at the hospital." " You wouldn't , I'll go easy on him." I look at him with a straight face " Please we both know you wouldn't be a match." James laughs at my joke, making me blush. Steve chuckles before looking at his cards. " Double or nothing?" " You got it Rodgers." After a couple of rounds and catching up with James it was time for him to leave. " Well I'm going to get some shuteye. You know your way out Buck. I'll see you tomorrow." James waves him off before taking a deep breath and looking at me. "So how was your interview?" He asks me to fiddle with an ace." I rest my head on my hand looking at him at an angle. " It was quick, Josh is." "Josh is what?" He asks, leaning into the table meeting my eyes. I gulped and searched his face. "Is a dish." James looks at me with an unreadable face. I look straight into his eyes before giggling, making him half heartedly chuckle. "Not funny Layla." "It kinda was. But em yeah it was quick and fast." James gives me the card "So I guess that means that you aren't available Saturday night?" I grab it still looking at him, never breaking an eye. "Available?" James slightly pulls the card, making my stomach do flips. "Yeah." I pull the card gently back. "Dancing? With you?" James learns a little closer to the table causing me to pull the card a little more. His eyes flicker between my eyes and my lips. Suddenly the door to my brother's room swings open causing us to let go of the card. "James , Layla, Britain just declared war on Germany."
