I feel my heart racing, like a drum that's beating out of my chest. I stare at the long and colorful roads. There are beautiful red and orange-leafed trees bordering the road and so many of the leaves have fallen on the road. I await a yellow bus that will come and take me away to school and bring me back after school. "It's gonna be okay, I'm gonna be fine, someone will like me. Right?" I repeat to myself a few times because I'm the only one on this road and I'm terrified of being disliked by everyone. I look up to see a bright yellow bus making its way down the road and getting closer.
As the doors open I step up and get ready for all of the eyes that I know and expect to be watching me. I look up and see the bus driver giving me a sincere smile and I smile back and muster up the courage to find a seat next to anyone willing.
I start to walk down the aisle and of course, everyone is watching.
I look for anyone with a nice smile and see two seats across from each other and each has 1 person in them. I sit next to the boy wearing a warm and welcoming smile, he's wearing a cream white sweatshirt with a green flannel hanging loosely over the sweatshirt.
I look over and see the girl sitting across from him and they seem so similar as if they were twins, on the other hand, she is wearing a white delicate blouse, some ripped jeans that expose her knees and shins, and a black leather jacket that makes her look much older and serious than she is.
I smile at the boy sitting next to me and I introduce myself, "Hi, I'm y/f/n, I'm new here, what's your name?" I ask the boy with a genuine smile because they both seem so kind and welcoming. "I'm Aaron, where are you from? I know it's not from Florida. '' he laughs and as he does I look at him a little more he looks like he's from either Hawaii or Samoa too.
" You're right, I'm from Samoa" He looks so surprised "MY FAMILY TOO!" He practically yells and I hide because I hear the bus go silent, then goes on to tell me, "By the way, the girl staring at us in the other seat is my sister Lulu." shooting her a look, I laugh and introduce myself to her as well.
She seems so kind, "Oh My God, I'll have to introduce you to Layla, who is my bestie and I bet she'll be yours too!" I've been on the bus for about 5 minutes and I already know this year won't be as bad as I thought.
"And I, on the other hand, will introduce you to Anaru and the guys" he interrupts Lulu and she looks at him offended.
I'm already loving this friendship that's blossoming I nod and say "I'll take both of you up on that offer, but who's gonna help me get around the school they both look at each other and I suddenly feel embarrassed "I mean, I was just hoping someone could help me since it's my first day and-"
I feel my face heat up and I look down at my hands as I start to ramble because I know my face is going a dark shade of crimson but thankfully Aaron interrupts me "No, No, It's not that we don't want to help you. It's just that you don't have your schedule do you?" I look up and realized it, I haven't gotten my schedule, I shake my head no " Okay I'll guide you to the office and you'll get your schedule there-"
"Ooh Ooh" Lulu cuts in "ask the lady with red glasses and brown hair for directions because she is the nicest go to her for anything and everything"
I nod and motion for Aaron to continue and he goes on and explains that they'll tell me where to go and that he cant help me afterward because he has to meet up with the guys and that he'll introduce me to them during lunch. I nod and say "that's a plan then" Just as I say that everyone gets up and I realize we made it to the school, I thought we've only been talking for a few minutes but turns out we're already at the school.
After I got my schedule I started to walk to my third-period class early, and after some arguing with my parents, they insisted I take band.
I walk along the long and over and open the band door and I look up and see a middle-aged man wearing a button-down shirt smiling and he greets me "Hello, I presume you are... y/n?" "Yes, I should tell you, I've never been in a band and I've only ever played the flute in 7th grade and now I'm a sophomore"
"Well, do you want to play the flute? You must remember something", "I'll try." I take the spare flute he handed me in my hand and the sheet of music in the other. I sit down in one of the many open seats, put the sheet music on the stand and I try to play.
A high pitched squeak comes out and I flinch "sorry" and I try to play again this time, still a high sound comes out, except this time smooth and calming and so I go on to play the next measures I look up and see that Mr. Alondo vanished I turn my head and continue playing and I see him start to play a smooth note that's coming from a saxophone I laugh to myself and the note comes out shaky I ignore it and continue playing the next measures and I lose myself in the calm and soothing music all of the sudden I look up and all of the band kids are staring at me.
I stop and all of a sudden my face feels like it's burning off and I know I'm blushing. Everyone starts clapping and I just look towards Mr. Alondo (the band director) and he's smiling at me and says "Flute it is." I get introduced to all of the band members and an especially nice flute girl who is named Lilly.
