*Present-day refers to about the time the first Thor movie starts. The timing here is a bit fuzzy and not completely accurate to the canon MCU sacred timeline.

*It's hard for me to find good detailed information on how the Einherjar works, so I'm going to be treating it like a more normal military like we are familiar with. If anyone has any critiques or advice or suggestions on how to improve how I write the scenes with them, please please let me know! I'd be happy to revise :)

A long time ago, in the forest just outside Asgard

"Loki!" You called out as you broke into a sprint. The two young gods were already ahead of you. You raced through the trees, heart pounding as you desperately tried to catch up with them. 'Stupid Thor, stupid Loki,' you internally grumbled as you regretted ever agreeing to race with them in the first place.

A sweet summer breeze blew your hair out of your face as you ran, and the grass brushed against you, leaving a ghostly tickling feeling with every movement of your little legs. Sunlight streamed through the pine trees, casting golden rays onto the forest floor.

"Ha! I won!" Thor yelled as he skidded to a halt by the tree with an X carved into it.

Loki caught up with him moments later, breathing heavily from sprinting so fast. "No fair! You win every single time," he whined.

"No, I don't! You won like last week!"

You slowed your pace to a jog as you approached the quarreling brothers. "Thor won," you agreed breathlessly.

Loki looked at you, an over-dramatic look of betrayal on his face. "How dare you, Y/N! You are no longer my friend!" He pouted, crossing his arms and turning away from you.

You merely laughed and grabbed him for a hug. "We all know you wouldn't last five minutes without me."

Thor smiled as Loki's initial disgust slowly faded.

Before another word was spoken by any of you, a distant voice called out for the brothers.

Loki quickly pulled away from you. "Sorry, Mother needs us," he said quietly.

"Perhaps Asgard needs saving!" Thor exclaimed, picking up a stick and brandishing it as a sword. He pretended to swat at imaginary enemies while you and Loki exchanged a look.

You giggled at his antics. "Perhaps it does. You guys better go, I'll catch up with you later!"

"Bye, Y/N!" Thor said cheerfully. His stick hit the forest floor with a thud.

"Bye, Y/N," Loki said more quietly than his brother. His eyes lingered on yours for just a moment before he turned to follow Thor.

You smiled to yourself before picking up the stick Thor had abandoned. You swung it like he did as you walked back toward the tree with an X. You gently put the stick down at the base, hoping to pick it up again tomorrow. Perhaps you would pretend to fight the Frost Giants of Jotunheim or the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim or maybe you could even convince Thor to let Loki win a race. Whatever it was, you knew that it would be waiting for you the next day. The thought made you grin.
