Natalie was looking forward to the company picnic for one reason and one reason alone – Robin. Since their kiss at the engagement party, she'd found herself thinking more about him and less about Sam with every hour that passed. The interactions she'd had with him since, when meeting the rest of Sam's family, and in the office, had been the highlights of her days. The hungry look in his eyes when he'd caught her making out with Sam down in the robotics lab had sealed the deal. Natalie was having fun with her extremely unavailable boss, but it was his available brother she really wanted. So, time to re-strategize.
After an extremely competitive tug of war (providing an opportunity for plenty of playful eye contact with the object of her affections) Natalie was at a loose end. The boys were with their grandparents, Sam was being monopolised by Sofia. She decided to get a coffee, and sat down to drink it, pondering what she was doing here. Well, obviously she was here to look after the boys. But, was it a wise move to make a move on Sam's brother?
But, she mused, the heart wants what the heart wants. And right now, hers didn't want Sam Dalton.
Someone sat on the bench opposite her, his own coffee in hand.
"You're a hard woman to catch alone."
She felt goosebumps shoot up her arms. "I didn't know you'd been trying."
"After what I saw at the lab, talking to you is all I've been able to think about," he said with a frown.
She looked back at him. Is he jealous?
"What the hell is going on between you and Sam? For real?"
He's jealous! "There's nothing going on."
"It didn't look like that.."
She leant into him across the table. "You know what they say about assuming, Robin."
He looked back at her. "I just want to know what I'm getting mixed up with here."
"Come on, Robin, we had lots of fun making Sam jealous last time. I mean..." She looked around flirtatiously, and put her hand on his. "Are we on a date right now?"
"No!" He sighed. "Look, Natalie, I'm all for some innocent flirting, like at the engagement party..."
She raised her eyebrows. "Oh, so you're all for it when it's you I'm flirting with?"
He put his hand to his temples. "You want the truth? I was on board for making Sam mad when I thought he just didn't want me sleeping with his nanny. I didn't know I was making him legit jealous that night..."
Oh. You complete and utter....
Sam was right about you after all. Why did I ever think otherwise?
How did I misinterpret that look in your eyes so badly?
"I think our date's over, don't you?" She stood up, pushed in her chair, and walked away.
"It was never a date.." she heard him protest. He sounded a little flustered. So he should. But she refused to turn to look back at him.
