donghyuck was hopeful as he awoke that morning, something had happened last night, donghyuck got to see some of that mysterious side of renjun and it was exhilarating. he wanted to chase after that delicate and soft side of huang renjun.
he should've known nothing would change.
he was almost happy to see renjun walk into class that morning, hood and cap securely covering the top half of his face, gucci joggers and air force ones to finish off the 'i'm rich but i don't care' vibe he was known for.
when renjun sat down he was expecting a 'hi' or a 'hello' maybe even a 'how are you?' but that surely wasn't what came out of renjuns mouth. and donghyuck didn't know why he ever thought the huang renjun would change.
"you look like shit, lee." renjun cursed, glancing at the tan boy's dirty and ripped t-shirt and dirty joggers.
"wh-what?" donghyuck stuttered quickly regaining his composure and trying to think of a comeback. "that makes two of us, didn't even try to wash the blood off this time did ya'?"
"you little-" renjun started before relaxing back into his seat, awfully quick compared to the normal huang renjun but no one was complaining.
"you going to hit me, huh?" donghyuck laughed quietly, leaning over leaning his elbow on renjun's desk, "give me a nasty old bruise? break out a couple teeth? break my nose? you look like a good fighter with those hits and cuts...might even be able to beat me." he taunted, scanning the males face.
"i didn't get these from a fight, lee." renjun cursed, "you know nothing about me, stop acting like it."
"but i do, huang. i know more than you think i do." the rather teased angrily, renjun is a lot more obvious than he thinks he is, especially to a kid like donghyuck.
"like what?" the chinese scoffed, calling the boys bluff.
donghyuck leaned in closer to renjun's ear, cheeks brushing as the boy cupped his hand over his mouth that was now adjacent to renjun's ear. "that baba give you those bruises." donghyuck's smile dropped, but it was obvious that his hopefulness for redemption was unrequited, he wouldn't let renjun know that much about him without returning the favor.
renjun froze, feeling donghyuck's hot breath on his ear, and soft cheek against his. how would donghyuck know? not even jaemin and jeno had figured it out, how did donghyuck?
"get the fuck off me." he growled back, shifting his eyes to anywhere but the boy.
"you brought this upon yourself, huang." donghyuck glared,, grabbing his bag and waiting for the bell to ring.

he was sat on the roof of the school, tears rolling down his face, a cigarette burning in his right hand, left hand clenching around nothing, just hoping someone would show up and hold it.
he felt like utter shit. of course he and renjun were mean to each other, they always have been. enemies, of course they would act in such hurtful ways to one another. but something shifted after they both experienced one of the worse pains to ever be brought down on a living person, death.
donghyuck knew what was happening between renjun and his dad, it was obvious to one who had experienced it. not the same, not the hits or the blood or the bruises. but the memories. the resemblance. the quick glances that look just a bit too much like someone else.
he had this unwavering urge to help renjun through it, or tell someone what was happening, and it was the last thing donghyuck wanted. because he and renjun were a pair with a destined path of hatred. but this, this painful similarity between the two, it was trying to shift the dynamic.
normally, donghyuck would ask his dad what to do. he's come home from his car pool with chenle and his family, tears threatening to spill and hugging his dad tightly. he would explain what was wrong, why he was so hurt, he would as why it was all changing, he would ask how to fix it.
and his appa would have an answer. just the answer he was looking for too. he would comfort the boy and ensure that the journey will smooth out soon enough.
appa and his fullsun. the sun and the sea. they had a special bond, not better than his other family bands, nor worse. just special, and different. for a long time, his appa had been donghyuck's best friend. even though his dad was ethically not the greatest person, with very conservative views. but one thing donghyuck learned from meeting friends through his dad. sometimes, you have to give people a chance even if you don't agree with them. they usually are some of the best people.
his best friend and his dad, gone. just like that. it's hard for anyone. but when you lose your appa too soon. your best friend, too soon. it hurts a different kind of pain. the type of pain when the sun falls into the sea.
so here he was, on the school roof, smoking a joint and crying his eyes out. looking up to his appa who he disagreed with on most things, but cared for more than anyone.
the sun was sinking.

safe, alone, mean, hidden. renjun knew how it worked, he knew what to do after he had spilled just a bit too much information to donghyuck. he had opened a shell he had sworn to never open to anyone after xinyuan.
hidden. xinyuan hated when renjun hid from the crowd, the fun, the quiet, from anything. she hated when he hid himself. because while renjun may be the moon, xinyuan was the stars. she had passed them on to renjun, but the still shined with her energy. her spirit.
stars. nothing more, nothing less. just, stars. xinyuan didn't need nor want anymore, because she knew that the moon would get all the stars one day. she had this hunch that being a star was really acurrate to the truth about them, they shine the brightest when they're dead.
the moon was heavy with the weight of all the stars on his back.
