they lay on the ground, blood gushing from ranboo's limbs. tired and overworked is all he felt in that very moment. nothing else mattered, not the hoard of life taking zombies running as fast as they could, not tommy's screams from behind, all tubbo could see was ranboo.

his perfect face, the many tears that rolled down his cheeks, his once lively smile turned down into a frown. he wanted nothing more than to turn back time. set all of ranboos pain away, free him from this cruel world he was born in. 17 years was all it took to crash and burn. living felt long and agonizing, but right now, minutes before death, it felt quicker than ever. he saw every memory flash before his eyes.

neither of them could even pop the question. of course there was something there, they both knew. yet too naive to even care. every moment in their lives led to this. such a tragic ending. a love story never finished.

so as tubbo grazed his hand along ranboos bloodied jaw, he knew it would be the end. tubbo couldn't dare to leave ranboo alone to die. tommy would survive. either way he didn't have much time to procrastinate.

"tommy! go, run as far as you can. for me," is all he could let escape his lips.

there wasn't any negotiating, tommy knew what had to be done. taking one last look at his best friends, zombies trailing not far behind, he knew he would be alone in his life. he also knew they wouldn't be alone in the next.

tubbo sank down into the dying boys arms, tears flowing out of his eyes. any minute now, ranboo would bleed out. the zombies would devour them. tubbo was immune to the bite, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't rip apart his flesh, limb by limb.

"boo, i'm sorry," he cried out.

"tubbo, don't make this harder than it has to be," with all his strength he gently took tubbo's face into his hands, "i love you, bo."

tubbo combed his fingers through the others hair. this was his last chance. his last words. slowly, he moved his hand down to the back of his neck, pulling him closer.

their lips met for the first time. such an intimate, meaningful kiss. all going to waste. both of them knew there was no escaping death this time. when they pulled apart, nothing could possibly be said. no words could match what they felt.

they sat there, longing for something else. possibly a different outcome than this. surely they could've done something to prevent this. or maybe they were doomed since the start.

ranboo fell back into the grass, losing strength by the second. tubbo laid beside him, so close yet so far away. he slotted their fingers together, such a perfect fit.

"i love you too, boo," is the last thing tubbo could say. ranboo was gone. all his blood pooled out on the grass. the zombies would get to tubbo any second.

tommy ran. far away. never even turning back. part of him wished he went back, hugged them both, whispered his last goodbyes, but he knew tubbo would've killed him in the afterlife. this is what he wanted, so he would fulfill his wish.

every night he looks up at the stars, wondering where he went wrong. that one day, when they found ranboo laying on the grass. if tommy would of just left him there, everything would be fine. he'd have his bestfriend all to himself. yet, he chose to help the poor boy. he saw the sparkle in tubbo's eye as he took in everything about the newcomer. the way they looked at each other. there was no doubt they wouldn't end up in love. who knew it would lead to this.

"We decided to stay friends,
  We were so young anyway.
We were friends who joke flirted,
Our eyes always met each other's in a group,
Friends who looked at each other for a bit too long,
Friends who slept too close to each other,
Friends who meant the world to each other.
The pain of not being yours was great,
but a good price for a best friend.
  So,
  The story ends here.
  We will always be,
  More than friends,
  Less than lovers."
