I'm in the middle of considering which carefully crafted lie would successfully help me guilt my father into pulling me out of this school as soon as humanly possible when the loud ring of the school bell snaps me out of my thoughts.

So far I've managed to make it through half a day of unnecessary introductions and badly planned out lessons. It seems ridiculous that the concept of public education would help me, in any way shape or form when I can achieve and do so much more productively in the comforts of my own home.

Still, I have to admit that this school has its redeeming qualities. Well, quality.

Specifically, a brunette with cuffed jeans, worn-out converse, and silver rings who's currently walking towards me, pushing her hair out of her face with one hand while carrying a can of coke with the other, type quality.

Melody.

She's taking unsure steps in my direction right now, looking rather uncomfortable for some unknown reason.

"Hello again," I greet her when she finally reaches me.

"Hi." Melody clears her throat "I know you'd probably want to spend your first lunch period here doing something else so I'll just give you the tour really quickly and then get out of your hair." she rambles, tapping a finger against the can she's gripping.

The quiet clang of her ring hitting the metal reverberates around us as I take my time looking her over.

"Quite the opposite actually. You're the most interesting I can think of in this place."

"Oh." I expect a blush to spread across her face but instead, she just scrunches up her eyebrows and tilts her head to one side giving me what appears to be a confused look. After a second of just looking at me, she turns around and starts walking, not seeming to care if I follow after her or not.

I quickly catch up to her and she starts pointing out things every few steps. I'm not paying proper attention to whatever she's saying though, instead, my focus lies on her eyes. They seem to be glowing, lit by the white lamps placed on the ceilings throughout the entire school from what I've seen of it so far. Even up close I can't distinguish the colour of them. One moment they're green, the next a bluish-grey hue overtakes her irises.

Suddenly, she stops. "Why are you doing that?" she questions.

"Doing what?" I ask back.

"Staring at me like that." a wave of her finger in the direction of my face follows the statement.

"I'm not staring at you in any particular way." At least I don't think I am.

"Yeah, you are. You're looking at me as if I'm a puzzle you're trying to solve."

"Huh."

"What's 'huh' supposed to mean?"

I shrug. She tilts her head again and I reach for her face grasping her chin lightly and her face tips back to its original position.

"That's the second time you've done that," I inform her.

"Done what?"

"Tilted your face. Why do you do that?"

She lets out a laugh and steps back from me, my hand automatically drops from her skin. "I don't know, it's just a thing I tend to do when I'm confused I guess." I nod, satisfied with her answer, and continue walking, hearing her footsteps trail behind me.

"You are a puzzle to me," I tell her once we've been walking in silence for a few minutes. "You have such open reactions, I've never seen that before." she laughs again and I turn to face her.

"Really? You must not get out much then." I think she means it as a joke but she's not wrong.

Instead of confirming that though I just nod my head once, thinking about whether other people have similar reactions as her.

Maybe this place won't be so bad after all.

Hi, Vik here. Sorry, this chapter was shorter than usual, it's more of a filler chapter that's necessary to the story than anything else. Also, I know it's a couple of days late, I've just been busy with school so I had to push back editing it for a little bit.  I still hope you enjoyed it though!
