"Mom!" I yelled as loud as I possibly could. It was an ear-splitting shriek that only happened on nights like these. Nights where my dreams weren't dreams any more. They were more like a second reality.

Ever since I had been sent to "The Works", a place that people are sent on official government business, I kept having nightmares. Nightmares of sadness and destruction, of loss and pain. On they other hand, it was much better than anything I had ever experienced before. I felt like I had a choice, but it was weird. Not a good or a bad kind of weird, just weird.

I heard footsteps pounding down the hallway that led to my bedroom. They were very swift, yet fast, and within a matter of seconds my door slammed open.

"Aiden..." she said breathlessly to my white and sweaty face. I wasn't sure what to say back to her without breaking the last bits of hope she had left for our world.

"Please tell me about what happened. D-during The Works "she almost whispered. Her eyes closed as I shook my head.

I couldn't tell her.
I had nothing to tell her.
All I remembered was walking through the 2, huge medal doors that lead into The Works. Everything went black for a while, then I was being forced out of the doors by some of the security. I couldn't tell her that because heavens knows how she'd react. I can only imagine a picture of scientists poking and prodding me with needles going through her mind, but I was obviously alive so I couldn't get her any more worried than she already was. It just wasn't worth it.

"Mom, they were just checking up on me. It was really nothing," I finally got out. There was no way she would fall for it but it really helped reassure me that I would be fine.

A single tear fell from her eye as she but a hand on my back, drawing me closer to her. She almost always smelled like those lemon candies that they sold at our little candy store down the street. As a kid every time is felt even a little bit sad, she made me feel better by handing me one of the little lint covered lemon candies that she always keep in her pocket. My eyes began to feel with tears as envy over how easy life used to be raged through my body. I fell limp in her arms, and cried until I was asleep.
