~Seven Years Ago~

"Happy 11th Birthday Sage!" a tall, young-looking women said to a boy, picking him up and hugging him. he laughs and smiles as she spins him around. "Mom! put me down! I'm not a little kid anymore". she laughs and puts him down, gently ruffling his hair as she puts him down. "i know I know. You'll always be my baby though" she taps his nose, making him giggle. "I have a very special plan for today, alright honey?" she asks him as they start to walk down the streets of Meredith, New Hampshire. "Is it a party!? is it? is it? is it?" he asks impatiently, she shakes her head and chuckles lightly to herself, "it's a surprise honey, you'll see soon enough". undisclosed to the boy this would be his last moments in his beloved hometown, he would not be returning home.

after years of growing up in a family with five older siblings and a single mother, sage was no stranger to poverty. after his father left them when Sage was only 3 as he started developing what some people would call, abnormalities, leaving sage with a sense of dereliction*. his mother became very distant, blaming him for her husband's change of heart. she felt as if though he had been cursed and in turn, sage had cursed her. as he grew older Sage saw less and less of his mother, leaving his eldest sister, Anya, to raise him. by the time sage had turned 6 he was diagnosed with vitiligo*, he became an outcast from society as the entirety of his hometown shunned his family.  after his older siblings moved away, he dreaded leaving the house, and yet he couldn't stand being in his house. So, he turned to the beaches and forest surrounding his home. enjoying a different kind of silence. one that made him feel at peace. When he turned 8 was when his mother started to show him what it was like to have a mother. she took him everywhere she went. whether it be to the grocery store or a trip for work. he began to feel loved again. that was until today...

he knew the forest like the back of his hand, even after years of not being here he knew. this was his favorite spot when he was young, after his siblings left, he was always talking to the animals that would come by. he looked around and wondered why they were here? none of his siblings show up like they did every year, there were no decorations, not even a cake. "Ma? why are we here?" he asked confused. he had never shown her this spot. it was his safe space, so how did she know? as he goes to say something else, she turns abruptly, tears streaming down her face. "Mama what's going on?" sage, concerned by the sudden change in mood walks up to her and hugs her. "I don't know what's wrong, but I love you mom" he smiled as she squeezed him. "I'm so sorry..." she whispers in his ear. suddenly she is squeezing tighter and tighter, panicking he tries to push her off as much as he can. "Ma?! ma?! stop you're hurting me." he says as he starts to cry. through his sobs, he can hear his mother start to chuckle which slowly turns in to a full laughter of pure malice, as though she's given up and lost everything. finally, the squeezing stops and instead all Sage can hear is a loud CRACK  as his ribs break. he lets out a gut retching scream when before he knows it, he falls to the ground as his mother is thrown back into the forest while a harsh static overwhelms his hearing. Through his tears, a tall shadow looms over his small body, slowly as his body becomes heavier and heavier, he turns his head in the direction of the shadow. A tall faceless man hovers above him, and before he can process what happened everything fades to black.

Dereliction: the state of having been abandoned and become dilapidated.
