"Do I have to wear the tie?" he asked, tugging the offending fabric loose. The feeling of something wrapped around his neck was really uncomfortable.

"Yes dear, it's a part of the uniform. You know this." His mother sighed, swatting his hands away to retighten the tie. "Honestly Berlioz you have no time for complaining you have to leave in a couple minutes." Stepping away, she hands him the navy blazer. "Put this on, fix your hair, and then come down for a quick breakfast."

He watches her leave before turning to the mirror once more with a sigh. Green eyes stare back from a slightly chubby face topped with messy blonde hair. Moving his eyes away from his face he stares at the uniform he wears. A white collared shirt with a navy blue and grey striped tie. Navy dress pants and blazer. The blazer has white accents along the seams supposedly because the school's colors are blue, silver and white. He feels they did it for the more fashion savvy students. It makes sense since the students voted on the uniform and there are more kids from Olympia's Crest than anywhere else in town. Of course that's because of the social standing one gains by living in a gated community he supposes. Everyone dreams of living in the gates, even his parents.

With a quick glance at his alarm clock he grabs his backpack and darts down the stairs. He runs past the living room into the kitchen where his mother stands waiting with a goofy smile on her face. In her outstretched hand rests a wrapped breakfast sandwich. He quickly grabs the sandwich and continues to the front door. Shouting out his thanks he continues his sprint out the door and down the road. His parents house is a small white two story on Onyx Street. It's only a couple blocks from the high school so he decided to walk or he supposes he is technically running it today but he doesn't care. If he's late for the first day of school Rosalynne will kill him. Rosalynne is his best friend, they have been friends since elementary school. But that doesn't matter right now since he can see her waiting outside the school. Slowing down he briefly realizes he had run the whole way there before he gets distracted by the building. The brick building looks important, surrounded by small buildings on one side with an open field on the other. Climbing the steps to the door he refocuses on Rosalynne who is staring at him in silent amusement. Clearly she was unimpressed with his guaking of the school but he couldn't care.

Finally at the doors she greets him "You were almost late dumbass." Obviously she knew that he knew that but it was their customary greeting at this point with how often he is late. "But I wasn't." He replies cheekily dodging a swat at the head.

They continued to chat as they followed the signs directing Freshman to the auditorium for the Gift Check. Every year the incoming class gets tested for a gift. Berlioz's parents did not get gifts in high school so his chances are low but still possible. Most people develop them around the age of 14. Of course there are some outliers like Jasper Holland, a classmate of theirs who developed bat-like wings in their last year of middle school. Walking into the auditorium they see Jasper being escorted out of the room into a room labelled Positive. Berlioz and Rosalynne sit down on the bleachers with their other classmates and wait for the Gift Check to be explained.

A tall man walks onto the stage and waits as the room descends into silence. The mysterious man wears a suit with an odd emblem on the breast pocket. It appears to be a shooting star with a galaxy trail. He stands with importance and accepts the microphone Mrs. Spencer runs to him. "Hello everyone, today me and some of my co-workers will be doing the gift check this year. If you could follow all of our directions then this will go smoothly and you will hopefully get to your classes within the hour. Now the test is simple. One of my associates will scan you with this handy device" he says as he pulls what appears to be a metal detector from his pocket. "It will tell us if you have a gift. If you are positive you will go through that door there" pointing to the door label Positive he continues "If you come up negative you are to head to class." With his speech finished the man walks off the stage and proceeds to enter the mentioned door. The door clicks closed and the auditorium erupts into noise as everyone and their grandma start talking to one another.
