It had been 5 months since River walked away from the pogues, from jj. Once Sarah spilled everything they'd been keeping from her, her mind could only go to one thing. jj.
By the time he got back, she knew everything, probably too much.
He lied about kiara, they were hooking up for months before they ran into that bookstore.
The whole gold problem was kept from her in every aspect, and to be honest river didn't care about that, she cared about the lies, the secrets.
Something that plays through her mind a lot is the look on his face when he put two and two together, when he realized she knew everything.
She ignored the yells for her to turn around, to listen to them. She got in car, drove two miles, then completely broke down.
Up until this moment, she was worried she didn't feel anything other that sexual need for the blonde, but the pain in her chest, the feeling of betrayal.. made it very clear,
She loved him.
-
"J, get up." John b threw the book bag on top of the boy and grabbed his keys. Now don't get me wrong, jj maybank has always hated school, but seeing her everyday, ignoring his existence, made it even more unbearable.
In these 5 months you'd assume they tried to fix it, that one of them, just one would fight for their friend, but no. River sat for weeks waiting for a call or even a text but it never came. Why? well the blonde assumed she'd never forgive him, never listen. So he let it go, assuming it wouldn't hurt this much. The rest of the group stayed out of it, for some reason. It pissed him off that they didn't care, but what made him even more mad was how much he cared.
"JJ come on!"
With a groan the boy got up, making his way to the van.

River had made some changes. She turned 18, She learned to never look toward the boy or his friends, she learned to ignore the whispers and focus on school like she always planned too. Here's the change she wasn't expecting, 2 months ago a picture went around of a blonde kissing kiara at a bonfire, she knew it was jj, but i guess no one else did. The first person to ask her if she was okay, was rafe.

"You didn't have to drive me to school.." River stepped out of the car, grabbing her bag. "You could also come to my school and we wouldn't have this problem." Rafe smiled.
"Kook academy? No thanks." She shut the door, looking back at him for a moment to wonder if his kindness was genuine or a trap, "Thanks for the ride."
When she turned around she made the mistake she had worked so hard to avoid. Those blue eyes watching him drive away, then returning back to hers. It's unbelievable that this hasn't happened yet, awkward eye contact, but this was the first. She pulled her eyes away, walking into school.
She had a routine, headphones, full volume, ignore everyone she could.
Once she got to her locker, she was stopped by a figure standing in front of it.
"Rafe again? Come on bookworm, you have better taste than that."
She took a moment, processing how weird today is going, then looking up at him. "Does Kiara know she's getting my sloppy seconds?"

The boy's jaw clenched and she knew that face all to well. He was jealous, so jealous that he decided to talk to her for the first time in 5 months. "Don't you have gold to find or some shit?" She slammed her locker walking away from him, but to her luck he followed. "So tell me Bookwork-"
She stopped abruptly, turning to face him.
"No. Stop with the nickname, stop pretending we are still friends. In my opinion we never were, and we definitely weren't anything more than that. Do what you chose to do after I found out you're a fucking liar, pretend I don't exist, and leave me the fuck alone."
He stood wide eyed, but river didn't wait for a response, putting her headphones back in, and walking to class.
