The streets were filled with puddles from the rain that poured last night. Different feet scurry in the pavements splashing the puddles away. Among these busy feet is a hooded pilgrim on search for something. The pilgrim hasten its steps quickly breaking free from the stampede of people and reaching an empty alley filled with garbage and filthy pests. The pilgrim went on its way towards a wall at the end of the alley. The lights flickered and the pilgrim was nowhere to be found what's left is something glinting on the ground an object that will soon shake and disrupt the flow of fate forever changing someone's life.
" You should take a break Anastasia, you have another surgery at four right?"
Anastasia heeded the head nurse's advise and went on the cafeteria to fill her empty stomach. After ordering her food she slouched on an empty chair and stretched her neck. She has been on duty for 12 hours now and will be on duty again in the next three hours. Although she was completely tired, Anastasia almost never complains and constantly complies with the fate given to her. She finds it useless to disrupt the flow of time. What's meant to happen will happen even if it is the worst thing of all. Ever since she was a child she always complies on what she was told to do. She never complains and soon after she has reached the peak of her life. She's a professional now and this made her even more compliant to what fate has laid down for her. She realized that following the straight path will lead her to something. But if there's one thing she ain't sure in her life it is the future far ahead of her. Strangely, although her path is already laid out she cannot see herself in the future. Everything is a blank. A void. A vast darkness without a hint of light.
When her order arrived, Anastasia began to dig in realizing how hungry she was. Doctors and nurses also began to crowd the cafeteria. In the mob of people someone was standing out. Perhaps it was because the flock of ladies wa concentrated in this person. It was not a strange occurrence for her. After all, connections can be helpful in the medical field. Lot of people become cliques supporting each other. While her, Anastasia, was never the type to approach someone first. But it's a different story when someone talks to her. After all, she believes that if someone befriends her it is the work of fate. She does not dare defy it and so she is responsive to people. Yet strangely, there are only a few who can stand her, the reason? She haven't got any clue. Her seniors however, are friendly to her, perhaps they respect her talents and skills. At the age of 23, she became known in the medical industry. Thanks to following her parents' rules, the heir to the Fernández chain of hospitals is a prodigy that stirred the world of medicine.
Not minding all the commotions around her, she proceeded to her office planning to get some rest before the operation in the afternoon. At last, Anastasia found some solitude in her office bed. As she closed her eyes everything she was trying to forget flooded her mind pulling her deeper and deeper into slumber.
Waking up, Anastasia quickly got her lab gown and began to do her rounds in the ward. She wanted to visit her child patient who was about to get a heart transplant that afternoon. Entering the room she saw someone watching the child sleep. A hooded figure. She cannot tell if it is a man or a woman. It was facing the child.
"Excuse me? Are you the child's relative?" She asked.
Despite asking the question, the hooded figure continued to survey and watch the child blatantly ignoring the doctor. Suspicious, Anastasia slowly stepped towards the hospital bed but was abruptly taken aback when the figure spoke.
"Will this child live?"
It's voice was melodic and soothing and it almost erased all her suspicions.
"It will depend on the success of the operation." Anastasia answered, now fully confused as her heart started to race without any reason. She was feeling anxious, curious, but what's weird of all is the feeling of nostalgia.
"Can't you be sure of the result?" It asked again.
"That is right, I cannot be entirely sure. It will all be up to this child's fate." She replied.
"Are you not confident of your abilities?" Once again it inquired. Slowly the hooded figure faced Anastasia, a seething pain attacked her mind.
" I - - I am confident," answered Anastasia despite the pain she was feeling. She caught a glimpse of the being in front of her only to see blurry pixelated face.
"Then why cannot you confidently state that this child will live?" Asked the hooded figure, now slowly walking towards the doctor.
"T-that is because no matter h-how skilled I am, if it is the child's fate to die I cannot do something to change it."
As Anastasia finished her words the hooded figure was already in front of her its hand stretched in front of her face. In its outstretched palm between its fingers she saw saw its lips form into a painful smile. And in an instant, without knowing how or why, if it is somehow a natural phenomena, the figure disappeared leaving words that lingered in the doctor's mind as she wondered if what she witnesses today was something real.
"Find it, and defy your fate."
