You never know when something's going to happen. One minute you're bored out your brain. the next minute you're on your way to feeling interesting, or excited or even totally freaked.
That sort of thing has often happened to me since I joined after school job, inc. you wouldn't believe a little high school job agency could get us all into so much trouble.
It's usually one of the others who starts it. we're doing some ordinary job and everything's calm and peaceful. then kick kontellis gets curious, or Tom moysten makes some stupid mistake, or Liz free feels sorry for someone. and Elmo Zimmer and sunny chan try to help them. and no one listens to me.
"It'll be alright, richelle , they say "it'll be fine!" And then, before we know where we are, we're all knee-deep in some terribly messy mystery. again.
But this time, the time I'm telling you about, the adventure was my fault. well, not my fault exactly. No one could have expected me to say no to what could have been my really big chance.
But I would have, of course if I'd known what it would lead to.
this is how it happened:
It was Saturday morning. I was standing in the mall with the others handing out leaflets for the raven hill gift shop. not my idea of a fun time. but it was my Job, and I needed the money.
At first I wasn't bored. I was doing an experiment. I was practicing my different smiles on the people who came walking toward me, to see which one worked the best.
My calm, knowing smile wasn't a big success. my big happy smile went down pretty well. but when I smiled the shy little half smile that shows my dimples, everybody who went past smiled back, and took one of the leaflets.
I enjoyed the same for about an hour, but after that I got bored. and my feet hurt. and I was thirsty.
After another hour, I'd really had it I didn't have that many leaflets left. I'd just about decided to slip away and sit down in a nice quiet café till it was time to meet the others for lunch, when a voice from behind me said "excuse me I couldn't help but noticing you. have you ever thought about being a model" and that's how I meet Dee Dee Delaney.
Have I ever thought about being a model? Are you kidding? Only once or twice or three times a day for the past five years!
I can't imagine anything better than being paid to wear great clothes and have people tell you how good you look I'd love to be a model or actress maybe.
So I turned around slowly and gracefully, patting my hair into place, ready for anything. then my mouth dropped open.
I'm not sure exactly what I'd expected to see
But what I saw was me. me, ten years older and ten times more glamorous. the women who was standing there had blue eye, like mine, but her makeup made them look much bigger and brighter. she had blonde hai like mine but it was pulled back into a elegant twist, at the back of her head.
And her clothes . . . They were amazing. I'd never seen anything like them. this women was really something. my heart started to thud. maybe this was it. my big chance.
I tried to pull myself together and act casual and sophisticated, but I couldn't stop staring. the women looked back at me with a twinkle in her blue eye.
She held out her hand. "nice to meet you my name is Deirdre (de-er-dra) Delaney, but everyone calls me Dee Dee. I'm a dress designer"
"Richelle Brinkley" I said shaking hands with her. "i...im a high school student" my head was spinning. I felt quite week in the knees.
