I hide in the brush as I watch the pale skinned men walk along the bank of the mother river.
Who are they?
I stay hidden in the brush, but continue to try and get a closer look.
I flinch back as one of them suddenly appear closer than the others with his back facing me.
Meeko goes towards the man and Flit tries to stop him. Flit fails and Meeko crashes into the mans legs. The man turns around in surprise and I hold in my intake of breath from the shock of how beautiful this man is. He hands something to Meeko that he says is sort of like food. Meeko eats it then turns to me and motions for me to come out. The man looks my way in confusion as he cannot see me.
I back away in fright as the man comes towards the brush I am hiding in.
Thankfully, I am saved by one of the other men when he calls for this one.
John? What a weird name...******
I followed above him to a waterfall and watch as he sits and scoops the water into his hands. I moved behind a tree to keep out of sight, but I catch his attention by accident.
I quickly hide my whole body behind the tree but when I look back, he is gone. I go down to see where he had gone. All of a sudden, he bursts through the waterfall
He follows me through the waterfall and I try to hide in the mist. I feel no possible danger so I stop and turn towards where he is coming from. I find him in the shadows, pointing something the colow of stone at me. His hard expression vanishes and is replaced by a look of wonder. What am I doing? That thing could be used to hurt me. I take off through the mist and hurry to my canoe near another waterfall. I am just about to row away when he calls to me. I turn around and give him a questioning look. What could he possibly want?
"Let me help you out of there," he says as he holds his hand out to me.
I ask him what he wants in my native tongue.
"You don't understand a thing I'm saying." He must not understand the language of my people.
I hesitate but take his hand anyways.
He helps me out of the boat and I stand with him.

"Pocohanto is a strange name."
"Your name is strange too. John Smith."
Meeko pops out of his bag with something in his mouth. John chases after him and fails to catch him.
He begins talking about his home and that they will be building those types of places here. He then uses a horrible word that hurts my very soul.
I feel the anger in my body inflame and I get in my canoe to leave, but he stops me.
"Woah. Don't leave."
"Let me go."
He says the word again and I let the anger pour out. "Savages?!"
"Yes. Well, not you, but-"
"My people?"
"Yes. Wait-"
I get out of the canoe and climb up the large tree nearby to get away from him, but to my dismay, he follows me. I watch as he slips on a branch and falls all the way down to the bottom to the ground. I hurry down to make sure he is okay. I move his helmet up a bit to check his face to make sure there is no blood. Our eyes meet and my breathing stops. His face inches closer, but I quickly pull away from him. I hear drums sounding in the distance and become alert. Something is wrong. I go to leave, but he grabs hold of my arm and I turn back to him just to have his face mere inches away from mine.
"I want to see you again," he tells me in a whisper.
"No, I can't."
"Why not?"
I pull on my arm a bit to try and get out of his hold. "I have to go."

I'm helping Nacoma gather corn in the feilds when my father comes over and tells us to get back to the village.
He leaves and John appears not minutes later.
Nacoma starts to freak out and is about to call for help when I cover her mouth before a single word leaves her mouth.
"What are you doing here?" I ask in a frantic whisper.
"I wanted to see you again."
I leave Nacoma there after telling her to keep her mouth shut about John and we go to Grandmother Willow.
He begins speaking about something that we supposedly have in the ground here. He explains what it looks like.
"Oh! We have a lot of that!" I pull out a cob of corn and show it too him, but he says that it is something else.
We hear people yelling for John in the distance and hide. Grandmother Willow gets rid of them and we come out from hiding.
"I have to go before they send a lot more people to come looking for me."
"When will I see you again?" I ask.
He lifts his hand to my face and lightly runs his thumb over my cheek. "Soon. Maybe tonight." After that, he leaves.
I lift my hand to my cheek. I can still feel it though it's not there anymore. I've never felt this way before. What is it about this man?
I go back to the village and find Nacoma.
"Pocahonto, why did you-"
She stops abruptly when we see canoes full of men float towards the land near our village.
My father greets them.
I get startled by Kokuum when he comes over and drapes his arm over my shoulders.
"Now that we have all these other warriors, those white demons won't have a chance," he says with so much hate in his voice.
I ignore him and run to my father before he enters the meeting tent. "Father, I need to speak with you."
"Not right now. The council is meeting."
"Father, we don't have to fight them."
"Not now Pocahonto."
