In the beginning there were two distinct groups of people, those who could harness chakra and those who could control the elements: fire, water, earth and air. Thousands of years ago, all people across all lands coexisted in peace, though it did not last for long. Those who could utilize chakra became known as ninja, while those able to manipulate the elements became known as benders. Ninja settled into villages later called The hidden Villages, while benders typically were separated by the element their bloodline could bend. The land of fire, home to the ninja village Hidden in the Leaves and also the villages of the Fire bending Nation. The Land of Lightning, home to the village Hidden in the Clouds and two of the Air Nomad Temples. The Land of Water, home to the Hidden Village of the Mist and also some of the Water Tribes. The Land of Earth, home to the Hidden Stone Village and Earth benders. The Land of Wind, home to the Hidden Sand Village and the last two Air Nomad Temples.

Many battles and eventually a massive war was fought between the ninja and benders. While the two groups were typically recorded in history segregated from one another, the first family to mix bloodlines produced an heir, Wan, that carried the traits of both sides of his ancestors. This child was later possessed by the great spirit of light, Raava, who has been present in this world since the beginning of time. He became known as the first Avatar and ended the war between ninja and benders. While most ninja could commonly only use one or two of the five basic chakra natures and benders could only use one of the four elements; the Avatar is the only person who can use both chakra and bend all of the elements. The Avatar could also call upon the energy of Raava, causing his power to increase astronomically. It is believed that the abilities of the Avatar are limitless.

After the lifespan of Avatar Wan began to dwindle, Raava who cared for him so deeply, could not fathom being apart from him and permanently bound their spirits together, declaring that they would follow Wan throughout all his future reincarnations, thus creating the Avatar cycle. Throughout history there were few recorded Avatars. While some may have hidden their abilities or even been unaware of their purpose and abilities, eventually it seemed the Avatar disappeared completely. As time moved on, so did the people. Tales of the all powerful Avatar were passed down throughout families and villages across the land.

Over the years, the population of the ninja bloodline continued to grow while it seemed the numbers of benders began to fall behind until there were only a few villages of each element left. Fearing the return of the all powerful Avatar, a group containing members from each of the hidden ninja villages who deemed the benders as the inferior bloodline, formed together to wage a new war on the benders in an attempt of mass genocide. Due to the diminishing masters of the elements they were quickly overpowered. The war ended just as quickly as it began. Lands were scarred. Villages were destroyed. Families and histories lost. Many benders were slaughtered, the rest were hunted and captured as prisoners of war and placed into work camps. Men, women, children, benders and non-benders alike; it didn't matter, all were hunted down. Some were worked or beaten to death. Others died from poor living conditions or disease. All hope was seemingly lost.

The work camps have been around for years yet there's still so many struggling, lingering, waiting for the sweet release of death. They are kept alive, but just barely, as the ultimate form of torture. For what? Why did this happen? As if the war and genocide wasn't enough. What happened to the Avatar, why didn't they stop this madness from happening? When will this atrocity end?
