Migraine is one of the most painful and debilitating conditions a person can experience, and the worst part is that there's not much you can do about it. Migraine headaches are often caused by changes in the shape and size of the blood vessels in the head. The blood vessels may dilate or the tissue in this area may become inflamed.

No one knows exactly who caused this to be so unsystematic. Current research into the causes of migraines does not yield many results and the debate continues. Some experts believe that migraines can be caused by constriction of blood vessels, particularly electronic changes in blood vessels similar to those seen in seizures. Others believe that migraines are actually hereditary, and people with a family history of migraines are more likely to experience the problem.

Migraine headaches should not be confused with regular headaches that a person may experience from time to time. They are polar opposites from each other. For example, a migraine headache can last anywhere from four to 72 hours, while a regular headache, or what doctors usually refer to as stress, can last several hours.

The pain is also more localized in migraine headaches, which often appear on the sides of the head, whereas severe headaches can cover the entire head area. Another difference is the intensity of the pain.

Tension headaches are milder and duller than migraines, while migraines can be very severe, accompanied by a throbbing pain that gets worse. Migraine headaches can be accompanied by other physical problems such as sensitivity to light, noise, and smell, as well as nausea and vomiting.

Migraine does not manifest itself as a variety of early symptoms. Recurrent headaches just happen and often take a person by surprise. However, there is a way in which a person can see visual hallucinations called auras before the actual migraine headache occurs. This type is known as a classic migraine headache.
