What Is CLCP?

CLCP is the acronym for Cleft Lip & Palate, which is the most common craniofacial anomaly with roughly 1 in 600 people having it. I was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate, which is the most extreme type, but there are a few types.

To keep it simple, a cleft lip is when the ridges connecting your upper lip and nostrils never fully form during development, leading to a split on one or both sides (unilateral if it's only one side, bilateral if it's both). A cleft palate is when there is an opening in the roof of the mouth, and a cleft lip and palate is when there is a combination of a cleft lip and cleft palate.

Surgeries are necessary for the afflicted to be able to do things like eat properly, but the affliction (specifically for cleft lip) is still visible with scar tissue and (often) an abnormal shape of the upper lip even after surgeries. These surgeries can be expensive, hence why charities such as SmileTrain exist.

People with CLCP are also often prone to dental and ear issues, and often have an underbite (which can be fixed with jaw surgery later in life)

For me, I have had all the necessary surgeries (and a few optional revisions) except for the jaw surgery, which I am set to have in roughly 2 or 3 years.

Anyways, CLCP isn't really shown about much in mainstream shows and movies, with some of the only examples being Joker 2019 (the actor has a cleft lip) and Cobra Kai (the actor for Hawk does not have a cleft lip, so it was drawn on). Thankfully, headcanons and photo editing software exist, so this book will mostly be for CLCP headcanons.

An actual pride flag for CLCP does not exist but I made my own.
