Mammon's POV:

Mammon could only watch as the human fled the library. Even if he wanted to chase after her, his feet felt as if they were chained to the floor; her one word, "stay," had frozen him in place and forced every bit of air from his lungs.

The regret, after he fully processed the words that spewed from his mouth, had been instant. The demon had let his frustration and annoyance at his brothers out on her 'cause she'd been the easiest target. She was soft, weak, and usually took the verbal battering without objection. But this time... That had been the first time Mammon had seen intense anger streak across her face and fuel her words.

Her emotion had actually hit him like a battering ram. Even remembering back to the first and only pact the demon had ever made, he didn't recall it bein' so intense. The reason he had even gotten up on time that morning had been 'cause his heart began pounding, pulling him from his sleep; it felt like the moment before Lucifer caught him and strung him up from the ceiling. A whole minute had passed before he realized it was because the human's emotions were steadily trickling into him.

Then, that realization had quickly turned into self-hatred and anger at himself. Mammon knew -- he knew what everyone would say once they found out about the pact. He'd be a laughingstock to his brothers, and he could already hear the whispered rumors that'd circulate around RAD. "Did you hear? Mammon was forced into a pact with that unremarkable human exchange student! How lame! So much for being called 'The Great Mammon'."

His embarrassment and frustration combined with the human's own emotions had brought him to where he now stood in that moment, staring at the library's doors. Another minute passed before he could finally move his body freely, the pact relaxing its claws. Anger still pulsed like a heartbeat through his body, but its intensity wasn't as debilitating as it had been.

"Fuckin' human," he muttered as he rubbed the back of his neck.

Whatever! It's not like he cared about her, anyway! Mammon would happily stay the hell away from the human, respectin' her wishes and whatnot. That's what he'd been gunning for, after all. The demon would forget all about the stupid mortal and the way, even with so much rage blazing through her, a sheen of unshed tears filmed their way across her eyes.

He would even forget the way her face had looked after passing out last night and he'd carried her to her room. The way she had looked so vulnerable and spent and small. He would for sure forget the way her tears had tracked down her face as her body was wracked by the bond, her hand clutching his own like he was the only thing that could save her. He would forget the feel of her warmth against his skin.

He had to.

'Cause there was no way that human would last the entire year here in the Devildom. Not at the rate she was going. Something would happen, some demon would kill her, and that'd be that. Without anyone to protect her, she was basically just a free meal. At least that meant he'd be free of the pact soon.

A spring back into his step, Mammon made to exit the room. That was just life -- the way of the world, if ya will. Natural selection at its finest. And Lucifer couldn't get on his case over her death if she had commanded him to stay away from her. The demon was just following orders, after all.

Mammon wasn't worried. Of course not! Even when he entered his first class late and didn't see the human who should've been there, he wrote off the tiny bit of panic gnawing at his gut. She'd been pretty upset, so maybe she'd just skipped. He'd bet that she was holed up in the RAD Library, drawing in that little book of hers. Yeah, that had to be it.
