Chapter 1

"Aww I'm late for school again!" I yell as I bang on my neighbors wall.

"Delaney! Get up my mom didn't wake me up today." Actually my mom has been missing for the last few days. She is a CIA operative and goes under cover all the time. The only thing is, usually she tells me when she's going. She just doesn't up and leave like this.

"What? What's going on?" I hear her mumble as I'm trying to do something with my curly mane.

"Get up we have 15 minutes to get to school. I will be ready in 5 minutes."

"Okay I'm hurrying," She replies with a labored breathe.

I pull on a dark grey cardigan with a light pink tank top and a pair of dark blue skinny jeans. Forgetting I'm running late I start to cook my usual breakfast, ham, egg, and cheese omelette with a side of Greek yogurt, after I get everything thing out I say screw it and grab a protein bar.

Choosing between a black flower scarf or a pink one with a chevron pattern, I choose the pink one, wrapping it around my neck while I throw on my sparkly Sperries and grab my backpack of of my desk in the study.

I jolt out my door making sure I lock all of the locks and just as I am turning to walk down to Delaney's door, she is by my side ready to go.

"Do you know if Austin is still waiting for us?" Delaney asked on the way down in the elevator. I gave her a puzzled look and shrug my shoulders. Austin is Delaney's ex and they are just really good friends now. But what she doesn't know is that I have liked him since the third grade and still have a major crush on him.

The doors open to Austin, leaning against the granite wall of lobby with that boyish smile and big dimples. His shaggy light brown hair comes just to eyes and his slight build is not defined through his letterman. "A little late are we," he says flashing me his crooked grin. His deep brown eyes igniting my fiery green one and I can't help but smile back at him.

"Haha, not funny," I snap back at him, a playful glare on my face. For a moment, it kinda seems like we are the only two in the room. Then reality comes back to me.

"Come on! Ain't no one got time for that. We have to be half way across Chicago in 12 minutes," Delaney chimed in, her musical voice ringing out in the lobby.

"Alright, don't get your panties in bunch, I'm coming. Austin, why did you wait for us? You know if you're late again, your mama is gonna kill all of us." My southern accent coming out slightly.

"Well, first of all Mitchie, I hate walking by myself and plus, your mom told my mom not to let you walk alone to school. So yeah, I really didn't have a choice."

"Well, in that case..." He cuts me off by ranting on and on about how he got accepted to honor band, and then the new movie he wants to see, and then the latest garage band he's into, and finally rounding it out with our upcoming Homecoming. It's the first time he is actually going so he is pretty excited.

We had made it all the way across town and up the school's concretey steps with minutes to spare. The moment we walk in, we are greeted by police officers to do security checks. I throw my bag onto the rotating belt and step through the metal threshold. It makes a buzzing noise as it always does and I show the cop my necklace, class ring, and earrings. Austin and Delaney go through with no problem at all and we rush to our first period class, chemistry. We take our seats right when the bell rings. Mrs. Ison starts the class off by taking role.

"Baker. Brunee." I raise my hand at the sound of my name last name.

"Caldwell. Dragon. Fitzgerald. Freeman. Goodworth. Henry." She continues down the list.
