Hoodie dumped his bag by the bay window and Ainslie did the same. She opened her mouth to speak before being interrupted by a loud knock on the front door. She jumped a little and froze, looking to her partner in crime for advice.
He slowly brought his index finger to his mouth. "They probably wouldn't knock if this was their house." He whispered and motioned for her to stay put. He left quietly and she heard him ask who knocked.
Ainslie fought the temptation to follow.
"I'm just in need of a place to stay. My name is Koby."
A mix of curiosity and fear took over and she walked to the wall next to the doorframe, tried to work up the courage to peek around to the kitchen where Hoodie and the front door would be just out of view.
"Is there anyone else with you?" Hoodie asked.
"No... Are you alone?" Came the reply.
He stayed silent and Ainslie could only imagine the poker face that he was pulling. After moments of deliberation he spoke up.
"Yeah."
The questioning continued as Ainslie tried to remember if the door was creaky. Instead she simply shuffled further from the doorframe and scoured her mental map of the house for somewhere to hide, just in case he let the stranger in.
Before the steadfast girl could figure something out she heard movement. She silently shuffled to the corner, hairs standing up on the back of her neck.
"Which direction are you headed?" Her friend asked.
"Well, I came from over there, so I guess I'm going the opposite way."
Hoodie chuckled almost tensely; "I'm going that way, too."
Ainslie saw the tip of a shoe enter the room. It paused abruptly.
"Hey, there's still some sunlight left. Do you want to help me find some food?" It wasn't a question.
Koby left the door frame with a chipper "Sure!"
Ainslie slid to the ground after she heard the pair of footsteps leave the house. The front door slammed.
She quickly came to her senses and shot out of sight of the bay window and waited a few minutes, hoping they'd well and truly left.
...
Cold air bit his nose, the sun seemed to be making a sprint for the horizon, like it was trying to get away from the events of today.
Grass crunched beneath Dream's shoes. He reluctantly walked side by side with Koby, making small talk.
"So how soon did you get there before I did?" The stranger asked in a friendly tone.
"Only a little while, enough time to make sure the house was empty and put my backpack down."
They walked along a treeline, not encountering anything that could be considered edible but for a few small birds, that clearly wasn't going to happen.
"And whose was the other backpack?" Koby asked, making eye contact.
"What?"
"There were two."
Dream paused for just the slightest bit too long before saying, "Is it so weird to have two backpacks?"
"Come on, It's obvious." Koby's smile was now teasing Dream.
Clay began to walk a bit faster, so Koby couldn't see his face while he deliberated on whether or not to tell.
HIs eyes narrowed before he eventually relented and stopped walking altogether. "Let's just head back, we already have food anyway."
