Back on berk, things were gloomy. Their heir Hiccup had been taken by a dragon a few days earlier and the whole village was affected. Their chief Stoick the vast kept himself locked inside his own house and spent his days in Hiccup's abandoned room that had not been affected by the flames. Gobber had helped rebuild the parts of the house that wasn't salvageable. Gobber brought him food and made sure he wouldn't starve to death by grief. They had both on numerous let the waterworks flow, though not when they were in the same room.

Astrid was in disbelief, she refused to think her best friend was dead. She was hoping that he had survived by some miracle and was on his way home. But every day, the horizon was empty. Astrid would make her way to their cove everyday and snuggle in the blanket nudged between rocks and pretend Hiccup was standing in front of her trying to catch fish like the day before he was taken. The smell of him on the blanket was fading off, a sign that the memories would stay just like that, as memories.

Her other friends had also noticed the huge affect on their friend. They missed him too. Hiccup had been good company and offered a sense of relief to their otherwise busy world. It took months but Stoick had to get back to his duties, though he could not, would not ever forget about his son.

2 years later:

Hiccup was now seven years old. Hiccup mostly only talked to the dragons in their own language, Draconic as he called it. His cave had started reflecting Hiccup's personality. It was filled with things Cloudjumper, and some other dragons had brought back for him to use. His bed was littered with blankets as the winter cold was harsh. Cloudjumper had brought back a cabinet thing thinking Hiccup would know what to do with it. Luckily for him, the drawers were filled with needles and thread as well as other utensils such as knives and different utensils. He filled the drawers with charcoal pencils, paper and various things from dragons. Scales, teeth and spikes.

Another dragon came back to the sanctuary holding a heap of clothes and furs, he said he didn't hurt the merchant and only gave him a little scare. He used some of the furs it brought back and made a vest and thicker boots for himself. He never did anything with the fur he arrived in. he didn't know why, but there was a feeling deep down in his stomach that he shouldn't turn it into something other then what it is. It was still too big for him to use as a cape so for now it hung over a chair by a small table he had made himself.

He had found a log while wondering on the beach outside of the sanctuary under the watchful eye of Cloudjumper. He had jammed in a few spikes from a deadly Nadder and gotten a Gronckle to run into it, splitting it into planks with a few waves here and there. The Gronckle had gotten paid with fish while the spikes were picked up from the ground. Hiccup got Stormcutter's help getting the planks inside. He propped them on top of some big stones that were just laying outside his cave entrance.

Hiccup wasn't allowed outside on his own as he was still too young and didn't yet know how dangerous the world was. Cloudjumper would take him out flying a few times every other day. But when Hiccup had to stay inside the sanctuary, he would entertain himself by playing with the baby dragons or practicing a new skill. He rarely had accidents when he was woodcarving, but they still happened here and there. He just put a clean cloth around it and stayed away from the knife for a few days before trying again.

Right now, Hiccup was trying to carve a plate out of a slate of wood as he didn't want the table to reek of fish and him having to clean it up everyday anymore. He was halfway done before he was interrupted by the screeches of the dragons that went outside the sanctuary and stayed away for days. Stormcutter was among them. But these shrieks were new. He stood up and ran out of his cave and ran towards the big clearing watching the returning dragons disperse. He could see Stormcutter flying towards him, she was carrying something in her tail. She landed a bit away and laid down the tiny black dragon in front of her. She gestured for Hiccup to come closer.

Hiccup saw a dragon black as night. He didn't have any horns but rather eight nubs in different sizes around his head. Two of them were bigger than the rest. He had never seen a dragon like this before. He reached out and stated stroking the unconscious dragon before him. "It's a Night Fury" Stormcutter says.

Just as she said that the Night Fury's eyes shoot open and backs away from both of them. It looked scared and frightened. It let out another shriek but with more hesitation and a lower tone as it backed itself into a corner. "Hi" said Hiccup slowly making his way towards the Night Fury, "I'm Hiccup. What's your name?" He asked sitting down a bit away to not spook him of. "Don't have one" It replied, "How do you understand me?" he asked, Hiccup could tell by his voice that it was a boy. He seemed to be around the same age as him. "I live here" Hiccup replied showing him a smile.

The Night Fury tried to smile back showing his gums. "Toothless?" Hiccup questioned, "But I thought you had-" The Night Fury barred his teeth at a Scuttleclaw that went to close "-teeth".

Hiccup thought for a while, "How about that?" He asked only getting a questioning look back from the dragon not knowing what he meant. "Do you want your name to be Toothless?" He rephrased. "Yes!" The Night Fury now know as Toothless replied.

Hiccup showed him around the sanctuary while most of the other dragons left to get food. "And this is where I live" Hiccup said concluding his tour, though only being able to show him the things he himself could reach. Those places included the plateau he was first taken to, a ledge on the side of a cliff he could climb onto with the help of wines and ledges in the rock, and of course a small tunnel that went out to a balcony of sorts where he could look over the beach and ocean from.

"This is where I sleep" Hiccup pointed towards his bed in the corner. Toothless smelled at the covers and sneezed as one of the furs prickled his nose. "This is where I cook my fish" Hiccup gestured to a tiny fireplace with rocks around it. It was a good thing there was a hole in the roof right above it or else it might have smelt a lot smokier in the cave. The hole was too small for a dragon to pass through which was a good thing. Though Hiccup thought a Terrible Terror might fit.

Hiccup and Toothless spent the rest of the day playing and exploring new places. Hiccup could not ride on Toothless' back as he was barely bigger than Hiccup was. They ate fish that Cloudjumper had brought back, and now they were both laying down on top of a yak skin on the floor.

Cloudjumper walked into the cave, "Time for you to sleep now Hiccup" she said before walking out again heading for the place she sleeps. Hiccup stood up, walked over, and sat down on his bed. He was about to pull the covers over himself when he saw Toothless walking towards the exit. "Where are you going?" Toothless looked back, "I need to find a place to sleep" He answered. "Can't you just stay here and live with me?" Hiccup asked hoping he would stay. Toothless smiled as he ran back inside and started spinning in a circle burning the ground and laying down right beside Hiccup's bed, good thing the floor was made out of rock. "Thanks Hiccup!"

Even if they had barely known each other for barely a day, it felt a if they had been friends all their lives. And that is how their friendship started.
