EMILY

It’s around 2 in the morning and I’m wide awake. My head is aching and my eyes are sore, but nothing compares to the pain I feel inside me. I could remember every moment that happened 3 days ago, the afternoon my boyfriend and his mom went to my 19th birthday celebration. It was just a simple and small gathering at our place. Nath, my boyfriend, and his mom were the only ones that I invited (since I know that Nath’s dad left them for another woman). Even so, I was hoping that the day would go well. It was 5:30 pm when I heard the doorbell ring.

NATHANIEL

“Are we any closer to your girlfriend’s house?” I heard my mom say nonchalantly as she drives the car.

“Hmm...Almost there, just turn right at this block and then go straight ahead...” I replied.

“Uh-huh. Turn right…Okaaaay…” She said, following the direction I gave her.

I’m really nervous right now, This would be the first time that I would meet her dad, and I hope that he would like me, more than that I hope that mom would love Emily. I never really had the chance to tell her things about her when we were together and more often, she’s always busy at work. So, I doubt it she even remembered Emily’s name. As we approach their house, I could feel the tension rising again.

“Mom, we’re here. Park right there, In front of that green gate that says E&J”, I instructed as mom follows but said nothing.

Now we’re out of the car and walking to the front porch, my heart is beating fast and thousands of thoughts entered my mind. Is she ready? Or Am I? Do I look Ok enough? Maybe too much? No. I suddenly felt lost in my own thoughts when I heard mom shouted, “Nath!”

“Mom!” I replied hurrily.

“Weren’t you listening to me?”

“What? You were saying something?”

“Yeah. I said we’re now at the porch, should we ring the doorbell?” she asked.

“Oh yeah…of course…Oh! And mom?”

“Yea?”

“Take it easy with Emily, Ok?”

“Sure. What’s her surname, by the way?”

“Vanderwal. Emily Vanderwal.”

Her face went blank, but she never said anything after that, so I rang the bell.

EMILY

*Ding-Dong*

“Here already?”, I said to myself. and I hopped out of the bed and ran to the front door.

“I got it!” I shouted.

“Heeey, you’re a bit early.” I said to Nath.

“Aww, I’m sorry. I was just a bit excited to see you.” he said, adding a smile.

“Aw, Thank you, Babe!” I replied, feeling shy as I noticed Nath’s mom beside him.

“Hello, Mrs. Caley, It’s nice to meet you” I said offering my right hand.

She accepted with a smile as she said “Oh hi, Ms. Vanderwal…uhm…Emily. Nice to meet you too.”

“Please, come in the living room, Dad’s still dressing up.”, I welcomed them to the living room and added, “Hmm…Could you wait here, Im’ma just tell him you’re here.”

“Sure, go ahead.” said Nath.
