———————————————————————————————————————-I was walking down the halls at school, holding onto my boyfriend's, Joaquin, hand. That's when she bumped into me.
"Watch it, loser." I called out, as someone bumped into me. But then I looked into her eyes and my whole world changed.
"I'm sorry." She mumbled, looking down, as I quickly walked away. She was beautiful. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. But she was a loser, and I couldn't talk to losers.
I walked to class. She was there. I kept glancing over at her, when. She noticed, I quickly glanced back down, embarrassed.
"Okay everybody, I'm going to put you all in pairs." She called it as she started pairing people up. She paired me and the loser together.
"Ugh. Can we choose our partner?" I asked the teacher.
"No." She quickly responded.
I looked over at the loser and saw her smile at the teacher. Weirdo.
"Hey," she whispered, putting a strand of hair behind her ear and smiling. "I'm Sophia."
"I guess we're partners."
"You want to come over to my house later? To work on the project, I mean." She asked, looking down.
How could I say no to her? "Sure, loser." I guess I'll have to cancel my date with Joaquin. But that's something I'm willing to do if it means spending time with Sophia.
I walk into the hallway because class just ended and see that Joaquin is waiting outside my classroom for me. "Hey, babe." He called out, wrapping one arm around me and dangling his wrist. He always hangs his wrist like that and I'm not sure why, though I do have some theories.
I go on my phone and see this guy send me a picture on my phone. He's shirtless and a guy, but his bibs are bigger than mine. "Oh he's kinda cute," Joaquin says. Trying to recover from what he just said, he quickly says, "I mean, I can see why you would leave me for him. I mean,oh no it's just, he has abs. Don't girls like guys with abs?" I roll my eyes.
The Project
After school I go to the loser's house. We're sitting on the floor of her bedroom, which is nicely decorated. It looks just like mine. She has posters everywhere.
"Hey loser."
"Hi Lauren."
"Where are your parents?" I ask
"Not here."
"Haha even your parents don't want you" I started laughing and she did too. "Why are you laughing?" I ask, confused.
"Because it's true. They tried aborting me but it wasn't successful. They used a hanger 'cause they were too broke but they didn't kill me."
"Ohhh so that's why you're such a loser."
She looked sad as I said that. I couldn't apologize but my heart felt heavy as I realized that I hurt her. I never wanted to hurt her again.
HOME
We finished our project and I went home. "Hey grandpa," I said walking into my house. My grandpa has custody of me since my parents are drug addicts. They lost custody of me for being crackheads.
"Hey honey! How was school?" He said, sitting on the couch with his feet up, smoking a cigar, and watching television.
"It was good. I finished my project. I had to work with some girl named Sophia."
"Sophia? The girl who doesn't talk to anyone?" My best friend, Andi, walks into the living room and kisses my grandpa, Marc, on the cheek.
"Yeah, that one." I reply, looking away. Andi is one year older than me, making her 19. She's been dating my grandpa since her 18th birthday, and I have mixed feelings about it. I've always wanted her to join my family, but this was not the way I was thinking. I thought she would marry one of my cousins or something.
"How was college?" I ask her. My grandpa Marc pays her tuition, so she goes to college for free.
"Amazing. I'm so thankful for Marc. He is such an angel." She said, smiling. She put on her apron and said, "Well, I'm cooking dinner now. We're eating pasta."
"Is that the only thing you know how to cook?" I ask her. We eat pasta almost every day.
"Yes, Lauren. It is. But you know I'm working on it." She replied, her voice softer.
I did know. We had been friends since we were little kids. Our friendship was ruined a little bit when she told me she was dating my grandpa, but I knew that was going to happen since we always joked about it when we were kids.
I went to my room and started to cry. I was in love with a loser. What was happening to me?
"Lauren!" Andi called and knocked on my door, letting herself in before I could answer. "Dress extra nice for dinner tonight. And I'm not cooking tonight. Marc is taking us out."
"Ok." I mumbled.
"What's wrong?" She asked, sitting down beside me.
"I just, it's so weird. We're best friends but I feel like we're slipping away. You act more mature than me and like you're better than me. I miss being friends." I said, crying even more.
"Oh I'm so sorry. I never realized that. You know you're still my best friend, right?"
"Yeah. Well, I guess I gotta get ready for dinner." I said and she walked out.
