Waking up in the morning was never easy. Sleeping was so difficult these days. Everyday I was pained with the burden of depression and anxiety, and I would always wake up around 4:00 in the morning with intense panic attacks.
The only thing that gets me through this suffering is my favorite kpop group, BTS.
What was once a small moment where I wanted to learn their names, turned into an obsession. I also have diagnosed ADHD, so this obsession could be more classified as a hyper-fixation.
I now spend my days watching several different BTS-related videos, because they're the only people in my life helping me through this incredibly difficult cycle. When I watch them sing, dance, and be foolish, all of my fears, anxieties, insecurities, just seem to wash away.
As I watch what is probably my millionth video about BTS, my phone rings. It catches me off guard, but I answer the unknown number anyway.
"Hello?" I answer.
"Good morning, is this Maeve Taylor?" the voice on the other line asks.
"Yes, this is she." I answer with hesitation.
"Hello ma'am, my name is Bang Si-Hyuk with Bighit Entertainment. How are you today?" the man asks.
My heart drops when I come to the realization that this man is the CEO of Bighit Entertainment, the same company that runs BTS. I somehow manage to muster up a response, despite the massive frog in my throat, "I'm doing good, how are you sir?" How did he even get my number?
"I'm great, thanks for asking. Listen this may seem strange, but when you purchased the physical 'Butter' album, you got entered in a chance to rehearse and dance with the 3J's, J-hope, Jimin, and Jungkook. The good news is, you won!" he explains through the phone.
My jaw drops to the floor. I am speechless. My heart is pounding out of my chest. I cannot believe what I am hearing.
"Ma'am, are you still there?" he asks.
"Y-yes s-sir I am here. I-I can't believe this. A-are you sure I won?" I ask with a stutter in my voice.
"Yes ma'am, you are the winner. Now, I wanted to touch base with you. Your flight and hotel are all paid for. The flight will take off on Friday. Once you land, we will have a driver take you to your hotel so you can have the opportunity to freshen up and get some rest, due to the inevitable jet-lag you will be experiencing. And then on Sunday at noon, you will be dancing with the boys. Does this all sound okay with you?" he explains.
"Y-yes sir. That sounds amazing. Thank you so much for choosing me. This is the greatest day of my entire life." I exclaim through the phone, still not processing what I am hearing.
"You're welcome Maeve. We look forward to seeing you Sunday. Members of my team will be emailing you all the information you'll need for your trip. Have a great rest of your day, ma'am." Si-Hyuk tells me, and hangs up the phone.
I hold the phone in my hand, still trying to figure out how this happened to me. I was an avid collector of BTS albums, but I never imagined this would lead to me flying to Seoul, and dancing with three members of my favorite band.
I check my phone, and realize it is Thursday, and my flight leaves tomorrow. I scramble myself together, and begin searching my room for my suitcase, and start packing clothes for my trip.
I pack a week's worth of clothing, not really sure how long I'll be in Seoul. I make sure to pack some good clothes for dancing, including some biker shorts and an oversized t-shirt. I figure this will be okay, as I have no previous experience with dancing.
As I finish packing, I lay down in bed, out of energy. I go on my phone, not sure if I should tell my friends and family about this. I decide to call my sister, as she is the one person who knows me best.
"Hey Maeve. What's going on?" my sister, Evelyn, asks.
"Evelyn, you will not believe what just happened to me. I just got a call from the CEO of Bighit Entertainment saying that I won a contest to dance to 'Butter' with the 3J's, J-hope, Jimin, and Jungkook!" I squeal through the phone.
"Oh my god, Maeve! That's incredible! You're flying all the way to Seoul? And dancing with them? Holy shit!" she rambled.
"Yes! I still can't believe it. I am so excited!" I say, my heart still pounding from anticipation.
"I am so happy for you Maeve. This is exactly what you needed. Do you want me to tell mom and dad?" She asks. She graduated college but she still lives at home to save up money for move out on her own.
"It's okay Evelyn. I'll text them. Thanks anyway. I'll keep you updated about everything. Love you."
"Love you too sis. Have a great time!" Evelyn exclaims through the phone.
"Thank you sis. I miss you. I'll talk to you soon!" I say.
"I miss you too girly. I can't wait to hear all about it!" She says, and we finish our call.
After our call, I text my parents about everything that has happened. They are a little skeptical, but they are supportive either way.
It's now later in the evening, and I decide to get ready for bed early to make sure I have enough rest for the flight tomorrow.
I lay in bed in anticipation for what is to come this weekend. I wonder what they will be like. I assume they'll be as nice and beautiful as they are online, because they truly are the most genuine people ever.
I feel my eyes getting heavy, as I drift off to sleep, dreaming about these next few days that are to come.
