30 HOURS LATER
"Miss (y/n)? MISS (y/n)!"
You jolted awake with the sun burning your eyes. A recruit at the mainland base had woke you up. You looked around frantically, and then got up in a panic. "Oh my god where is Mr. Husk?" you shouted. The recruit held your shoulder. "You were dead asleep once you landed. We knew you were exhausted, so we took him to the hospital and let you rest. Man, he doesn't talk at all does he?" You panicked more, grabbing the collar of his shirt and pulling him close to your face. "Where is he?!" you shouted at him. "N-no need to panic ma'am. He's at the military hospital just a few blocks away. He's been there for about 6 hours now." You pushed him back and exited the chopper. Luckily, there was a taxi right in front of the base.TIME SKIP
You ran up the stairs to the floor Husk was admitted to. Finally getting to the designated floor, you stopped to catch your breath. You suddenly felt a tap on your shoulder. You looked up to see that it was another military doctor like you, holding out a check. "Nurse (y/n) from 'nam?" he asked. "Yes sir" you replied. "I'm looking for Mr. Husk." You took the check. You looked at it and your jaw dropped. It was $1,500, which was a LOT back in the late 50s.
"General in 'nam sent it through. He said your heroism and hospitality astonished him, and that you deserve it. Anyways, Husk just got out of surgery. He hasn't said one word since he got here" the doctor said while walking you to Husk's hospital room. When you got to the room, you shook his hand and walked in. Husk was laying in his bed watching the old antenna TV with tired eyes. He was oblivious of your presence until you cleared your throat. "M-Mr. Husk?" you quietly asked. He looked over at you, then giving you a big smile. That was the first time you saw him genuinely smile, and you loved it. "(y-n)? Oh thank god. I thought you left me here" he said in his weak but rough voice. You were astonished at how much he was talking. "I thought you said you didn't need anyone" you chuckled. He rolled his eyes and grinned.
You sat down beside him, holding his hand. You learned many things about him while in deep conversation. He lives by himself because his family all died in war, he can speak many different languages because of his time in Vietnam, and he loves to gamble. You opened yourself up too. You told him about how you were homeless in the streets of Jackson, you managed to go to college as a nurse, and that you went to the military so you'd have a place to live."Husk, how come i'm the only one you talk to?" you finally asked. Husk paused. He had to think for a minute. "Hell, it's because you're the first person I saw when I woke up in the medical tent. I saw your worried but caring expression looking down on me. You helped me when I felt the worst pain i've ever felt in my whole damn life. You've dedicated your life to me, and i'm grateful for that. You're gonna move in with me, right dear?" He kissed your hand. You held your head down and smiled. "Well, we don't have any other options anyway, unless you want me to throw you into a nursing home" you joked. Husk laughed. "No ma'am. I could get used to having a pretty lady taking care of me until i'm not longer crippled." You smiled and blushed.
