The four of them sat in the cold candle-lit room, staring at each other from opposite sides. Cam and Malachai were seated on the edge of one bed while Leon and Hugue shared the edge of another. They could hardly believe that they had found another illegitimate royal child, and what a place to have found her. Hugue examined her carefully, taking particular note of her facial features. Although her skin was a light caramel and her hair was a dark brown, she seemed to share most of Esther's own features. Cam's eyes had the same glimmer and almond shape, her movements and manner had the same grace and her lips seemed as though they had a natural red tint, just like Esther's.
Hugue suddenly saw her lip slide up into a half smile as she caught his gaze. His eyes immediately shot over to the vampire sitting next to her and Hugue bit the inside of his mouth with guilt.
Cam had to stifle a giggle but it seemed Leon was still trying to gain an understanding of the situation.
"I'm still struggling to make sense of all of this. So you are indeed human?" Leon asked, waving his finger at the young lady.
Cam opened her mouth to answer but Malachai beat her to it. "Yes, she is human I assure you." Hugue snorted at the vampire's remark, as though his assurance was of no value.
Hugue felt all eyes turn on him with disapproval, including Leon's so he bid Malachai to continue. "You see, a few months after the signing of the Peace Treaty, there was a plague that inflicted this village. It was very sudden and the first victims were the former protectors here, the hunters. Then soon, everything failed. Crops refused to grow abundantly, livestock no longer prospered. Chamberlain diminished quickly.
I was part of a rogue coven who spent most of their time searching for a feed. So when I discovered that it was my own people who had caused such ruin, I felt disgusted. I offered to help this village but I was immediately turned away for who I was. Only Cam was brave enough to reach out to me. We immediately placed a seal around this village to protect it and although it is my magic that holds it, if I were to die, the seal would remain. However, if Cam were to perish, the seal would be broken whether or not I am alive."
Hugue frowned at Malachai's explanation, thinking it all confusing and impossible. "But if it is your magic, then why does Miss Blanchett hold ultimate power over the seal?" Hugue inquired but looked at Cam, noticing that she was staring back at him.
"Well, you see Captain," Malachai began. "The seal we placed was one that required a sacrifice of pure and noble blood. You do not have to necessarily kill the individual. A single drop would be enough." Cam nodded with a cheery smile in affirmation. Although she held herself with a sovereign's grace, Cam also seemed to be quite childish for a 23-year-old.
Apparently, Cam wasn't the only one immature for her age. Leon had turned his eyes to look at the young lady, a sly smile spreading across his lips. "Ah, pure and noble huh? I mean, nobility is a no-brainer, but 'pure'. Does that mean you two have never...?" Leon asked coyly, moving his eyebrows up and down playfully.
Malachai grinned in amusement while Cam burst out in laughter. "Oh we're not a couple. I mean, don't misunderstand me Malachai, you're a good-looking man and all, but I don't plan on being deflowered by a blood-sucker, no offense."
Leon laughed at her remark and Malachai shook his head with a chuckle, feeling no offense at all. Leon elbowed Hugue playfully but his friend shot him a grumpy frown. "A virgin? Pure indeed. You hear that, Hugue? She's pure, just like you," Leon said hysterically.
Hugue snarled before punching his friend in the leg. Leon continued to laugh as though he felt nothing, while the vampire sitting across from him had blown up his cheeks to hold in his own hysteria. Cam nudged Malachai in the side to stop his laughter and Malachai hung his head guiltily.
