The Enforcer

To better my character development, I took on other jobs to expand on my focus and expertise. I joined a law enforcement paramilitary unit on alternate Earth. After leaving Earth and exploring other parts of space, I found out that there were other humans in our solar system. I found a desolate planet that has resembled Earth, that is, after years of nuclear wars and pollution.

Who said the planet would be inhabitable after severe radioactive pollution? Humans would make anything work if they have to. They erected tall, thick walls to keep the irradiated wastelands out. Even then, the areas nearest to the walls suffered from the radiation.

The gigantic walled city was policed by a overworked police department. Every day, there was a consistent number of crimes being committed. The police respond to the crimes to the best of their abilities, but there was a limit on what they can do. Hence, agencies like my unit was essential, We accompany these officers on their rounds, providing the support they would require, Although our role was mainly to police the criminals, we often employed anti-terrorist tactics against the criminals. The officers themselves were more soldier than officers too. Armed with a series of ammunition which ranged from non-lethal to hi-explosive, from the stun grenades to the concussion grenades, from machine pistols to sentinel automatons.

Today was one good example. We accompanied a senior arbiter and a new officer on assessment. I was the medic on the team. The rookie assessed the day's crimes and chose a crime to tackle. I consulted my leader. It was a triple homicide at a location not far from the section police station. We outfitted ourselves to go to a war. These days, you can never be too sure what we are going to encounter out there.

The senior arbiter was familiar with our team and has worked with us on several occasions. There was a light mood in the air as we traveled to our location. He was due to retire several months ago, but held back as there were a shortage of senior staff. This was his last case, he promised his wife. I sniggered then, telling him that calling a last case was bad luck, but he waved it off as superstition.

I knew this was probably going to be my last case too. It has been almost 5 years spent on this planet. My vessel was hidden far out in the irradiated wasteland. I allocated myself time on learning the ropes of an enforcer, and due time was almost up. Our wagon reached the location and we dismounted, and we moved like a disciplined unit, covering all possible angles of attack. The crime that we responded to was a triple homicide with possible gang affiliation. The bodies were mutilated and crushed. The arbiter called in the coroner as the new officer scoped out the place. No one wanted to be involved and no one saw anything.

Grunt police work was going to have to bring this in. Our expertise as a para military unit was not needed here. I sounded off to my commander. As a medic there wasn't much I could do for corpses. The coroner took the bodies away for resyk and that was it. It was an uneventful ride back to HQ and I logged out for the last time, leaving the planet for my next course.
