Hello and welcome to my strange mind! It's been a long time since I've ever written anything I thought was decent enough to publish anywhere, but I came up with this idea last night and could not get it out of my head. I hope you enjoy this story as I hope to continue to write it. Please be kind and patient and any feedback is welcomed.
Enjoy the story!————————————————————————
I sat at the end of the bed with my head perched on top of my hands, staring off uninterestingly into space waiting yet again for another body to release its soul. These ones are on my Top 10 list of least favourite deaths. These souls desperately cling onto their bodies until the last possible moment, just hoping to spend more time with their loved ones. If only they knew that soon they'll have an infinite amount of minutes to spend together, suspended in time forever in their own versions of paradise.
It's okay for them, they get over the hurt pretty quickly. Even the souls still wrapped in their own bodies learn to live with the pain eventually. I, on the other hand, am not as lucky. My soul ceased to exist a long time ago.
There is a name that every soul on earth has heard of whether they fear it, idolise it or just don't really give it much thought. Whatever their opinions may be every single one of them will eventually come face to face with the creature behind the name and they're all aware of this.
However, what none of them ever know is why or how this creature of death, who collects souls for all of eternity, was created.I chuckle to myself as I muse over my inner ramblings when a thought occurs to me, what if there were souls who knew the truth? Would the revelation even change anything? Could I actually have a chance to be free? Well, it's worth a shot what have I got to lose anyways? My soul? Hilarious.
I am the Grim Reaper and this is my story.
"MAM! Nooo!"
I'm snapped out of my thoughts by a woman screaming in anguish. Jesus woman, I may be a creature but I still have ears. Ah good the soul of the old lady on the bed has finally been released, it's about time. But wait, where are they?"You looking for me?"
I jumped slightly and turned around to see a much younger, healthier version of the woman who was just laying on the bed a few moments ago.
"Shit, I forgot you people do that. No I was waiting for the chair to die, obviously I was looking for y... ow!"
The woman rudely cut my sentence short by slapping me across the back of the head, with quite some force might I add.
"One, do NOT swear in my house and two, have a bit of compassion will you? My family have just lost me"
I can't help but laugh at her scolding as I say
"Compassion? You do know who you're talking to right? You've got some courage, I'm almost impressed."The woman ignores my comment, only raising her left eyebrow in acknowledgement, before she began talking again,
"What did you mean when you said you forgot 'us people' do that, what do we do?"
Oh joy, I thought. I've got a curious one on my hands. I fight the urge to reply with a sarcastic remark and instead I nonchalantly say
"When your body gives up, your soul takes the form of your self when you were at your happiest... If you deserve it that is."The woman opened her mouth about to ask another annoying question when a distraught looking man bursts into the room and collapses into fits of tears by the old lady's bedside.
The intrusion quickly reminds me that I have a job to do and so, before the woman gets a chance to question it I wrap my cloak around her, transporting us both out of the house, out of her old reality down on earth, and into her new one where she will stay forever...
Or so I thought.
