Chapter 4

Shocked, I ran up to Jasper and the body. Alberta hasn't moved and I knew she was that shocked she just couldn't move. I didn't dare look down at the body to find out who it was. But I didn't have to. Lying there lifless, was Noah. I swallowed. He had blood sliding down his face, making him look like a murdered ghost. There was a rip in his shirt, a little lower than the heart, with blood smothered in blobs on the very top of the cut. He didn't seem real. His clothes were ripped and stained and he was completely lifeless. I could feel the tears building in my eyes and I felt like my heart could explode. Alberta walked silently and stood next to me, cheeks wet.

"What happened?" I asked, softly. I sat next to Jasper, putting my arm around him. He leans in to me, tears soaking my coat. Jasper looked up at me, eyes full of sorrow.

"T-They came. T-The Nazi. I-I was picking up these raspberries from a-a bush, they couldn't see me but Noah was in full view. They shot h-him. They left, immediately. Some business meeting, I suppose!" He said, laughing half-heartedly. I smiled, then realizing what he had said.

"They came? I thought we were further away..Wait. Raspberry Bush? Show me. We need food for this journey, to....a home" I said, hands on hips. He grinned, leading me and Alberta to a big bush that was full of juicy, red raspberries. I lick my lips, rubbing my hands together. I smile and begin to place the fruit into my basket.

"Hey, Alberta? Can you do this while me and Jasper bury Noah. I spotted a few shovels by that tree. We'll call you when we're ready to say goodbye" I said, handing her the basket. She smiled and nodded. I smiled, gratefully, before picking up the shovels and handing one to a weak Jasper. We began digging, dirt spraying the nearby bushes. My arms were aching. The hole was pretty big by now, big enough to fit Noah in. I nodded and Jasper who stopped. I laughed. He obviously was tired from digging, huh! We headed over back to Alberta who was still busy picking berries. I felt my jaw drop open.

"Wow! How many raspberries? You've done great, Al!" I exclaimed, astonished at the sheer amount of raspberries in the basket. There were over 500 raspberries in the basket, but not just raspberries, oh no! Somehow, Alberta had managed to find apples, pears, acorns and even blueberries! Jasper was staring at the basket, licking his lips. I laughed, smiling at Jasper.

"What?" He asked, innocently. I laughed again. Alberta laughed and grinned. Alberta handed me the basket, stretching out her aching arms. She looked at me, questioningly. I knew what she was asking. Is the grave ready yet? I nodded. Smiling sadly, she put her hand in mine. I led her to the grave where Jasper was already waiting. I saw Alberta's eyes fill with tears.

"Do you want to help put the body in the grave?" I asked Alberta. She shook her head, turning away.

"OK. I understand" I said, nodding. Jasper looked at me, nodding. Slowly, I picked up Noah's feet, hands stained in blood, placing it carefully in the hole. Alberta turned around, walking closer to the hole. Suddenly, I had an idea.

"Hey. I've made a timetable for this funeral. I won't tell you it, I'll just tell you what we'll do first, second and third, OK?" I said, rubbing my hands together. Jasper's eyes lit up and Alberta smiled.
