Chapter Ten: The Hanging Tree

After we hustled Jacob into the woods and the reception was finished, the couple left for their honeymoon. Jacob wouldn't leave his room until Bella got back. I was on patrol with Paul one night a week before school started.

I'm gonna miss you when school starts... I whimpered and he nudged my face with his huge head.

You're gonna be fine. I'll be waiting for you after school every day. He licked my face. We phased back around ten and dressed behind a tree. As I was putting my shirt on, my phone rang.

"Hey, Rose. What's up?"

"Nova, Bella's coming back. She's...pregnant. With Edward's baby. She's still human."

"Oh, my God. How is that possible?!" Who knew what this could mean for Forks. And the reservation. This baby could be dangerous. Then I thought for a second... It's a baby. Just a baby.

"Nova... Another thing. Bella wants you and I to protect her and the baby. Once Jake finds out, he's going to go back to Sam's pack and they're going to kill the baby. You have to help us." She pleaded. I knew Rose had always wanted a baby. So had I. And now neither of us would have our own. But I could help. I agreed and hung up, jogging back home.

"Nova, you're not going over there." Paul said beside me. I growled.

"Yes, I am. I can't let Sam's pack or Jake or anyone hurt that baby. Not until we find out if it's dangerous or not."

He narrowed his eyes and grabbed my hand, making me stop.

"Then I'm staying with you. Every second, understand? Seth, Leah, Embry, and Quil can run patrols." He pulled me into a hug. "I know why you're doing this."

"And why's that, wolf boy?"

"You and Rosalie have a common ground. You both think because you can't have kids that you need to protect Bella's while she can still have them." I pulled away from him and nodded.

I got Carlisle to write an excuse for school. One of the administrators knew about the wolf thing, so he let us off without failing us for missing school. Someone would be sent to the Cullen house with my work for the first month of school.
The morning I should've gone to my first day of senior year, I was up before daylight and packed a bag. Paul met me outside. He kissed my forehead and we went to the Cullen's. When we got there, Rose met us outside.

"They're not home yet. But they will be soon. Come on. Hi, dog." Rose narrowed her eyes at Paul and he growled.

"Guys, chill. Be nice to each other, please." They nodded and we all went inside. Carlisle and Esme hugged me. Emmett slapped my back.

"Leader of your own pack, huh?" He smirked and I punched his shoulder. Alice and Jasper looked wary. Alice loved Bella. I understood that she didn't want to see Bella hurt.

After about thirty minutes, a car pulled up outside. Rose and I rushed to Edward's car and helped Bella out before he could. He growled and Rose stood between Edward and me.

"Edward, stop. They're helping me." Bella sighed.

"Hey, Bells." I whispered as I carried her inside. It had only been two days since she found out and she was already losing weight and color. I carried her inside and up the stairs to a seperate living room, laying her on the couch. Rose and I stood protectively around her for several days. Then Jake came... I smelled him as he ran up the stairs. Rose growled at him.

"Rose, it's fine." Bella muttered from behind us. Rosalie and I stepped aside and Jake stared at Bella as she stood. Her belly was big, she was paler than before if that were possible, and her face and limbs had virtually no meat on them.

"What did you do?!" He yelled at Edward.

"Jacob, stop. This was Bella's decision." I said quietly. Paul stood next to me.

Jacob left Sam's pack and officially joined mine. But I knew his ulterior motives; he was going to kill the baby as soon as he could. But he and Edward had talked about Jacob killing Edward if Bella died.

Over the next couple of weeks, Rose and I helped Bella shower and we figured out that the baby was part vampire, so it wanted blood. Carlisle and I got a lot from the hospitals in Port Angeles and Forks. Bella's body was responding well to it. But Jake said that Sam and his pack were coming. Sam knew that he lost the element of surprise and his pack was still outnumbered. They would keep the house surrounded and wait for opportunities to pick the Cullen's off. And the Cullen's needed to hunt... We also guarded the house.

Eventually, Edward warmed up to the baby after reading its mind, hearing that it loved them. He was finally on our side. By this time, the baby was close to delivery. Carlisle, Esme, and Emmett needed to hunt, but Sam wouldn't hesitate to go after them when they did. Jake went out into the woods with Seth and Leah one night. Embry and Quil guarded them quietly. Jake called for a truce with Sam's pack. Jared and another member confronted him. I could hear everything. Then Sam howled, alerting Jared and the other boy about the trick.
