It was late February 2018 and Chloe, a sixteen-year-old high school student from Dundee was getting ready for school. At the time she was on study leave for her prelims and decided to go to school and work on her design assignment. She was going to grab some lunch with one of her friends Finn and go to school together. As she went down stairs to grab her coat and leave, her mum caught her and said that she shouldn't go into school as there was going to be a bad snow storm and schools were already thinking about sending the pupils home. Chloe just ignored her mum and said that she would be fine, not realising that making that mistake would change her life forever.
She was meeting Finn at the café right next to their school where there used to always go together as kids to get milkshakes. As kids, Chloe and Finn were the best of friends for years, doing everything together, but all that changed when they were both in primary seven. At this time Finn started to have feelings for her and ended up kissing her at the leavers' disco. Chloe sadly didn't feel the same way and just wanted to be friends. When they both met up at the café they sat at the same seats as they always have (the high chairs facing the big window that viewed onto an old street that had a crack on the pavement where everyday someone would trip over it). For years, they both would laugh over watching person after person falling face first into the pavement. However, today was different. Finn seemed quite down; well he wasn't as energetic as usual. He told Chloe that his dad, who was in the military, was going to be away for two more months. Finn lived with his dad, older brother Ryan and golden retriever, Sammy but cause his dad was away a lot it would just be him, his brother and dog as sadly his mum died when he was younger. To make him feel better, Chloe said that when she finishes doing her assignment they could go to his and order a pizza, which cheered him up. As they walked up to school there was a chill, an unsettling chill that shivered down her spine, which ended up making Chloe think if her mum was right. Should she have gone to school?
As they entered the school, they walked along to the tech wing which was the other side of the school. The design department was small, there weren't that many teachers or pupils. All the design classes had been cancelled for the day and a lot of the pupils had gone home, so Chloe and Finn had the department to themselves. As Chloe went to collect her work, her teacher, Mr Burns, asked if she wanted to stay behind after school and work on her assignment, as some teachers and the janitor would still be there so she agreed. As Chloe was working Finn was just messing about with the equipment and other pupils work. After an hour there Mr Burns burst in and said that he had to leave as he had to go collect his daughter from her dance class as it had been cancelled due to the bad weather but that he would go and tell the janitor that they were still there and that they didn't have to leave until about 6pm. As Mr Burns was leaving, he shouted over to the janitor saying that Chloe and Finn were still in school and to let them out when they needed to leave. But what Mr Burns didn't know was that the janitor was wearing earphones and hadn't hear him.
As Chloe was working, she was feeling tired and decided to close her eyes for a minute and fell asleep. When she woke up, she didn't know where she was for a second but when she saw Finn still asleep on the table, she remembered she was still in the school. However, something didn't feel right, it felt more quiet than usual, it was really cold inside and it was dark outside. As she looked over to the clock to see what time it was, the shock of her life came to her, it was 9pm! Realising this Chloe started shouting at Finn to get up and that they fell asleep. As they ran to go find the janitor, all the lights were turned off and they couldn't find anyone. Realising this, they knew that the janitor had already left. In a panic they ran to the doors to see if they could to get out but they couldn't get out, All the doors were locked, they were LOCKED IN!
At this point they started to freak out, trying to open any doors or windows but having no luck. Finn went over to one of the switches to see if they could get some light and to their shock they did. Chloe then had the idea to call her mum but as she looked at her phone, she had no signal. Due to the thick walls of the school a lot of the rooms have no signal so they went on this mad adventure to find reception.
A wave of darkness then hit. All the power had gone out, it was pitch black. A wave of sickness came to Chloe's stomach, her hands were all sweaty and she became to shake. Finn quickly grabbed his phone and turned his torch on as Chloe sighed of relief. They both realised that they were going to need power so they made their way to the fuse box located in the technician's room.
The technician's room was always thought to be a grim and dingy den which no one would go near. As they entered it gave off this spooky vibe, everything was covered in cobwebs and it looked like no one had been in there for years. As they came up to the fuse box it looked old and worn out, but even so Finn tried to get it up and running. He started to fiddle with some wires and saying that he knew what he was doing but Chloe knew something was going to go wrong. After a while Chloe went to look round the room to see if there was anything they could use to then look back and to see Finn getting shocked by the fuse box.
He then collapsed to the ground, not moving. Chloe ran over to see if he was okay but to only find out that he wasn't breathing. Chloe didn't know much about and first response but had seen a couple of episodes of Greys Anatomy, this then led to her trying her best at CPR and after a couple of rounds of it, she bravely gave him a couple breaths of life leading too him to breathe again. he came to, he asked her what happened and after she told him how that she had brought him back to live all he could do is smile at her and say that he took it that he had got a cheeky kiss of her then. Even though he was laughing, Chloe knew he wasn't well. He was pale, he had such a strain on his heart, it was getting even colder and she knew that she had to get him something to eat, fast.
As she carried him to the cafeteria he was becoming less and less awake. He was becoming restless with her saying that he was cold and all he wanted to do was sleep. Chloe knew she wasn't going to get much further carrying him by herself so she decided to place him down and grab a blanket to wrap over them both. As she sat there trying to keep him warm his words were starting to slur and she could feel his heart start to slow down.
Trying to keep him awake she started to talk about all their memories together and how it was so important to her. Just then, that's when she realised that she didn't just love him as a friend but she actually truly loved him and that all she was doing her whole life was hiding all those secrets in side and all she wanted to really wanted to do was spend the rest of her life with him. As she looked at him, she could feel his spirit leaving him. With tears in her eyes, she leaned down to give kiss him but as soon as she did, he took one last breath and was gone. As Chloe looked down at her lifeless friend, realising that she wasn't never going to be with the person she truly loves. As she was crying, she could hear faint sound in the back ground, and as she looked through the window, she could see the lights of a police car in the distance, trying to get through the terrible snow storm. At this point Chloe realised that she was saved and that she was going to get out of there but that sadly it was too late for Finn.
