Leigh pov:
Today was the start of my fifth year at Hogwarts. I'm a pretty good student for the most part although I don't compare when it comes to other students like my friend Hannah Abbott. She's one of the smartest and most hard-working people I know. You'd think because I'm in Hufflepuff I'd be more hard-working but I haven't been myself since the loss of my best friend Cedric Diggory. He was one of the tri-wizard competitors last term, I knew it was a bad idea as soon as they pulled his name out of that damn goblet. I snap back to reality when my other friend, Zacharias is telling me to pay attention to dumbledores boring welcome back speech. I roll my eyes at him and then act like I'm paying any mind to the headmaster when I catch a glimpse of her, Hermione Granger the most gorgeous girl at this school. Many people would argue that she isn't anywhere close to other girls, but to me, no one else compares to her. I've had a thing for Hermione since the third year, she's everything I could imagine perfect could be. The only issue is, she doesn't even know who I am.

The next day during breakfast, I'm at it again, staring at her when Hannah and Zach wave their hands and shake me out of my thoughts.
"you know, you should really just talk to her" Hannah suggests
"I'm sure she is friendly" Zach continues Hannahs thought
"Yeah that's a great idea, why don't I just throw my head in the toilet while I'm at it, she doesn't even know I exist, why start the embarrassment now," I say trying to move on from the subject completely. I know for my own sake I should really talk to her and get it over with, I've liked this girl for two years and haven't even spoken a word to her once. I mean why would she spend any time on me? I'm an invisible Hufflepuff to her or anyone for that matter.
When breakfast is over, I start heading to my first class of the year, potions. While walking to class, I'm starting to wish that my phone would work while at school, I could really use some music to drown out the loud-talking students rushing to class. Once I get to the classroom my stomach drops when I notice two members of the golden trio there. Harry and Hermione. Why couldn't it have been the weird redhead? Finding my seat and getting my ink and quill out waiting for professor snape to start the class. Everyone begins taking their seats when snape walks in, and of course, the two of the trio sit at my workstation along with two other Ravenclaw students. Thankfully I'm able to keep my focus during class as Snape emotionlessly tells students to turn to the first potion subject in our books. The draught of peace potion is probably my favorite out of all the potions in the wizarding world and the one I use the most. I've always found potions class pretty easy because my mother always experimenting with them.
As the class goes on Snape has let everyone start collecting and making their own draught of peace potion as he slowly walks around examining my classmates. Insulting almost everyone getting it wrong, especially Harry but I don't think it has anything to do with potions. Snape passes over Hermione, no surprise there, but also passes over me but not without making a half-enthused comment.
"looks like your mother is rubbing off on you Lewis"
"Thank you professor" I reply to Snape, causing the other students at my shared station to look up to see what I was doing so they could do the same. When class is finished, Snape awards Hufflepuff and Gryffindor each 5 points for my and Hermione's 'almost perfect brews' as he put it. He gives the class the homework of two pages of parchment about what and how to make the potion due tomorrow. Everyone beside Hermione sighs and is upset but goes on with getting to their next class.
My next class is defense against the dark arts with the new professor from the ministry, some pink bitch from what I've been told. As I follow students into the room, I take my seat in the front of the class making a mental note of how the teacher really looks like cotton candy. You're telling me she looked in the mirror and thought 'aw yes I look good' I thought to myself. She begins the class by telling us were going to be taking a new approach to defense against the dark arts by not using magic and using a new curriculum that is ministry approved. What is this lady on, I mean how are we supposed to learn like this? Before I could think of my next thought, I look behind me and see Harry talking back to the professor about not being able to defend ourselves when we are attacked. Going on about he who must not be named returning, bringing my thoughts back to my best friend's death. It was Harry who was with Cedric, not me. I should've been there when he was killed, but all I could do was hold his dead body and cry. He needed me in the end and I wasn't there. I think of that every day.
Harry looks at me knowing I was Cedric's best friend and offers me an apologetic look, but instead, I just face the front of the classroom not paying any attention for the rest of the class.
When class is done, I pack my things into my bag and go to leave before I'm stopped by Harry with his two best friends not far behind him but also giving us space to talk.
"Leigh I'm sorry about bringing him up during class, I know you were his friend and I should have thought about what I was saying"
"It's alright Harry I know you were only trying to prove a point to Umbridge, thanks for apologizing though. I appreciate it." I look past Harry to see Hermione looking at me trying to hide her confused look but failing to do so. I excuse myself from the conversation and head up to my common room needing to be alone after the first day of school.
Maybe I'm not ready for the new school term
